UFC 174 PAY-PER-VIEW PREVIEW

By David Tees on 6/13/2014 1:30 PM

The UFC will be making history this weekend when the UFC Flyweight Title will finally be defended in the main event of a pay-per-view. That is because Demetrious Johnson will defend the gold against Ali Bagautinov in the main event of UFC 174. Also, Rory MacDonald faces Tyron Woodley in a welterweight division scrap and Andrei Arlovski makes his long awaited UFC return.

Kicking off the action is a light heavyweight division bout as “The Real Deal” Ryan Jimmo (19-3-0) competes against Ovince St. Preux (15-5-0). Jimmo has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC run, with his last fight being a win over Sean O'Connell at the UFC Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale. St. Preux is currently undefeated under the UFC banner, with a notable victory coming over Nikita Krylov at UFC 171. St. Preux is quickly becoming a big star in the UFC and that star is going to rise as he hands Jimmo a loss in this one.

Heavyweight division action is next as Andrei “The Pit Bull” Arlovski (21-10-0-1NC) does battle against Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub (10-3-0). Arlovski will be returning to the UFC after a six year absence and he is a former UFC Heavyweight Champion. Schaub will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, last defeating Matt Mitrione by submission at UFC 165. It is very good to see Arlovski back in the UFC, but his return will be spoiled as Schaub wins his third straight.

More light heavyweight division action is happening next as Ryan “Darth” Bader (16-4-0) battles Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (12-4-0-1NC). Bader has rotated wins and losses in his last five UFC appearances, with his last fight being a win over Anthony Perosh at UFC Fight Night: Bigfoot vs. Hunt. Cavalcante will be looking to build on the momentum of his first UFC victory, which came over Igor Pokrajac at UFC Fight Night: Belfort vs. Henderson. Cavalcante has admittedly not been performing at his best since coming to the UFC, Bader will take advantage of that to get the victory.

Up next is a welterweight division attraction as Rory “Ares” MacDonald (16-2-0) takes on “The Chosen One” Tyron Woodley (13-2-0). MacDonald has won six of his last seven under the UFC banner, most notably beating Damien Maia at UFC 170. Woodley is coming off of the biggest win of his career, which came over former UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit at UFC 171. Woodley is riding a major wave of momentum after defeating Condit and he will get one step closer to a title shot when he defeats MacDonald.

Headlining this card is a UFC Flyweight Title bout as champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (19-2-1) defends against Ali “Puncher” Bagautinov (13-2-0). Johnson will be making the fourth defense of his championship, last defending it against Joseph Benavidez at UFC On Fox IX. Bagautinov is currently undefeated in UFC competition, most notably defeating John Lineker by decision at UFC 169. This is a great opportunity for the flyweights to finally get the spotlight on them, but it will be Johnson holding onto the gold either way.
