Arguably the biggest event in the short history of the World Series Of Fighting happens this Saturday as the promotion makes its debut on NBC. The event is going to be headlined by a lightweight title belt as Justin Gaethje defends against Nick Newell. Also, Jon Fitch battles Dennis Hallman and UFC veteran Melvin Guillard makes his WSOF debut.
Kicking off the action is a featherweight division affair as Pablo “The Hurricane†Alfonso (9-5-0) competes against Cody “Bam Bam†Bollinger (15-2-0-1NC). Alfonso is currently undefeated in WSOF competition, having defeated Miguel Torres by submission at the WSOF VI. Bollinger is also undefeated under the WSOF banner, having defeated Tyson Nam at the WSOF VIII. The winner of this fight could be next in line for a bantamweight title fight and it will be Bollinger defeating Alfonso to get that shot.
A pair of lightweights will collide next as Gesias “JZ†Cavalcante (18-7-1-2NC) battles Melvin “The Young Assassin†Guillard (31-13-2-2NC). Cavalcante has won two of three fights in WSOF competition, most notably defeating Tyson Griffin at the WSOF IV. Guillard will be competing for the first time since his UFC release, which came after a loss to Michael Johnson at UFC Fight Night: Gustafsson vs. Manuwa. Cavalcante has a far superior ground game when compared to Guillard and that ground game will give him the win as he upsets the UFC veteran.
Up next is a welterweight division attraction as Jon Fitch (25-6-1-1NC) takes on Dennis “Superman†Hallman (53-14-2-1NC). Fitch will be looking to build on the momentum of his first WSOF win, which came over Marcelo Alfaya at the WSOF VI. Hallman will be making his WSOF debut in this fight and he will do so on the strength of a three fight winning streak. Hallman's best days are behind him at this point in his career and it will be Fitch getting the win over a fellow UFC veteran.
Headlining this card is a bout for the WSOF Lightweight Title as champion Justin Gaethje (11-0-0) defends against “Notorious†Nick Newell (11-0-0). Gaethje will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating Richard Patishnock at the WSOF VIII. Newell earned his opportunity for the gold when he defeated Sabah Fadai by submission at the WSOF VII. These are easily the two best lightweights not in the UFC right now, but it will be Newell shocking the world to take home the gold.
