BELLATOR 122 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 7/22/2014 8:49 PM

There are three big MMA events taking place this weekend and it will all be kicking off with the Bellator 122 card. The final 2014 Summer Series event will be headlined by a pair of tournament finals in the welterweight and middleweight divisions. There are a total of eight fights on the preliminary card, which includes a light heavyweight tournament semi-final fight.

Kicking off the action is a heavyweight division bout as Matt Frembling (9-2-0) competes against Augusto Sakai (6-0-0). Frembling will be making his Bellator debut in this fight, but he has previously fought former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia. Sakai has already fought once under the Bellator banner, having defeated Rob Horton at Bellator 94. Frembling has fought far better competition when compared to Sakai and that experience will get him the victory.

A pair of light heavyweights are set to clash next as Linton “The Swarm” Vassell (13-3-0-1NC) does battle against Virgil “Rezdog” Zwicker (12-3-0). Vassell is currently undefeated in Bellator competition, last defeating Trevor Carlson at Bellator 114. Zwicker has already competed once in Bellator and he has also defeated Bellator veteran Mike Hayes at a KSW event. These are two of the better light heavyweight prospects in Bellator right now, but it will be Zwicker leaving with a victory.

The lightweight division will be featured next as Stephen Martinez (10-2-0) is in action against Sergio Rios (7-0-0). Martinez is currently undefeated in Bellator competition, having defeated Bryan Travers at Bellator 102. Rios will be making his Bellator debut in this fight and he has seen only two of his seven bouts go past the opening round. Rios has looked impressive heading into his Bellator debut and he will look impressive again as he defeats Martinez.

More heavyweight division action will be happening next as Manny “Bam Bam” Lara (4-4-0) dukes it out with Dmitry “Wicked Machine” Sosnovskiy (8-0-0). Lara will enter the fight riding a three fight losing streak and he has not won a fight in well over three years. Sosnovskiy will be making his Bellator debut in this fight and he is coming off of a victory over Aleksander Emelianenko. This looks like the bout was set up to give Sosnovskiy the easy victory and that is exactly what will be happening.

Another lightweight division battle is in the lineup next as Saad Awad (15-6-0) clashes with Joe Duarte (10-3-0). Awad has previously competed in two Bellator tournaments, making it to the finals in season eight before losing to Will Brooks. Duarte will be making his return to action after a two year absence and he is a veteran of Strkeforce competition. Awad is one of the better lightweight strikers in Bellator right now and he will out strike Duarte to get the win.

Welterweight division action will be occurring next as Karl “Psycho” Amoussou (17-6-2) battles Fernando Gonzalez (20-12-0). Amoussou has only won just one of his last three under the Bellator banner and he has previously challenged for the Bellator Welterweight Title. Gonzalez will enter the bout riding a two fight losing streak and he has been an active MMA competitor for over a decade. Amoussou is looking to get back into title contention and he will be getting a little closer when he defeats Gonzalez.

Up next is a featherweight division attraction as Bubba “The Highlight Kid” Jenkins (6-1-0) takes on Poppies “The Tachi Kid” Martinez (29-9-0-1NC). Jenkins has won three of four fights under the Bellator banner, most notably defeating Sean Powers at Bellator 114. Martinez will be looking to build off the momentum of his first Bellator win, which came over Josh Smith at Bellator 116. Jenkins is easily one of the best prospects Bellator has under a contract right now and he will score the biggest win of his career as he defeats Martinez.

Headlining this portion of the card is a light heavyweight tournament semi-final fight as Kelly “Crossface” Anundson (8-2-0) faces Philipe “Monstro” Lins (9-0-0). Anundson punched his ticket to the tournament semi-finals after defeating UFC veteran Rodney Wallace at Bellator 121. Lins earned himself a spot in the second round after defeating Austen Heidledge by submission at Bellator 121. Lins looked absolutely dominant in his opening round bout and his domination will continue when he defeats Anundson to advance to the finals.
