The UFC is going head to head with Bellator MMA this Friday Night and they are bringing the big guns to the battle. The event will be headlined by a huge middleweight division contest as Ronaldo Souza faces Gegard Mousasi. Also, Alistair Overeem faces Ben Rothwell and a past TUF Champion is stepping back into the octagon.
Kicking off the action is a flyweight division affair as John Moraga (14-3-0) competes against Justin “Tank†Scoggins (9-1-0). Moraga is a former challenger to UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson and he has only won just one of his last three in the UFC. Scoggins will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came to Dustin Ortiz at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale. Moraga is looking to get back into title contention and he will be doing just that when he gets the victory over Scoggins.
A pair of featherweights will collide next as Nik “The Carny†Lentz (25-6-2-1NC) is in action against Charles “Do Bronx†Oliveira (18-4-0-1NC). Lentz has won three of four fights since dropping to featherweight, with a notable win coming over Manny Gamburyan at UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva. Oliveira is coming off of the biggest win of his career, as he became to first fighter to submit Hatsu Hioki at UFC Fight Night: Te Huna vs. Marquardt. The first fight ended in a controversial no contest after an illegal knee strike by Oliveira, but Oliveira is the far superior fighter this time around and he will be up a non-controversial win this time.
Lightweight division action is happening next as Michael “Maverick†Chiesa (11-1-0) does battle against Joe “J-Lau†Lauzon (23-9-0). Chiesa has won four of five fights during his UFC run and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 15. Lauzon has only won just two of his last five fights and he has not put together a winning streak in almost three years. Lauzon has seen his career slide downwards for a little while now and that downward slide will continue as Chiesa hands him another defeat.
Our first heavyweight bout of the evening is next as Derrick “The Black Beast†Lewis (11-2-0-1NC) battles Matt “Meathead†Mitrione (7-3-0). Lewis is currently undefeated in UFC competition and he is a former Legacy FC Heavyweight Champion. Mitrione has won two of his last three fights under the UFC umbrella, last defeating Shawn Jordan at UFC Fight Night: Kim vs. Hathaway. This is a pivotal fight for Lewis to see if he can build himself into a contender in the UFC and he will start that build when he defeats the longtime UFC veteran.
Up next is a heavyweight division bout as Alistair “The Demolition Man†Overeem (37-13-0-1NC) takes on “Big†Ben Rothwell (33-9-0). Overeem has only won just one of his last three in UFC competition, with that lone win coming over Frank Mir at UFC 169. Rothwell has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC run, with his last fight being a win over Brandon Vera at UFC 164. This is a must win situation for both competitors in this one, but it will be the better striker in Overeem getting the duke.
Headlining this card is a middleweight division bout as Ronaldo “Jacare†Souza (20-3-0-1NC) faces Gegard “The Dreamcatcher†Mousasi (35-4-2). Jacare is currently undefeated in UFC competition and he is a former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion. Mousasi has won two of three fights during his UFC run and he has already defeated Souza, which happened back at DREAM 6 in September 2008. Souza is the far improved fighter when compared to Mousasi five years after the first fight and Souza will gain some revenge when he gets the win.
