CAGE WARRIORS 72 PREVIEW

By David Tees on 9/10/2014 4:23 PM

With three of the six MMA events taking place this Saturday, it will all be kicking off on Saturday with a loaded Cage Warriors 72. The event will be headlined by a pair of title bouts in both the welterweight and bantamweight titles respectively. Also, UFC veteran Che Mills is competing and plenty of top international prospects are stepping into the cage.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division bout as Oliver “Ollie” Jones (0-0-0) competes against Azi Thomas (2-0-0). Jones will be making his professional MMA debut in this fight, but he did win two of five fights as an amateur. Thomas has already competed once in Cage Warriors, having defeated Ellis Hampson at Cage Warriors 68. Jones did not have a great run as an amateur and his pro run will start off just as bad when Thomas hands him a loss.

The featherweight division will be featured next as Phil Raeburn (5-4-0) does battle against Damo “Yeti” Weeden (3-3-0). Raeburn is currently winless under the Cage Warriors banner, having dropped a fight to Jamie Pritchard at Cage Warriors 67. Weeden will be making his Cage Warriors debut in this fight, having primarily competed in the Phoenix Fighting Championships promotion. These are two competitors who are badly in need of a win and it will be Raeburn getting that victory.

A women's bantamweight division bout is happening next as LJ Adams (1-2-0) is in action against Amanda Kelly (1-2-0). Adams will enter this bout riding a two fight losing streak and she is returning to action after a year layoff. Kelly has spent her entire career in the Cage Warriors promotion and she also enters the fight with a two fight losing streak. This is a must win situation for both competitors in this one, but it will be Kelly getting her second victory in Cage Warriors.

More women's bantamweight division action is next as Paulina Bonkowska (3-2-0) dukes it out with Kate Jackson (4-2-1). Bonkowska will be returning to action after a two year layoff, last competing in the Poland based KSW MMA promotion. Jackson will also be making her Cage Warriors debut in this fight and she has not won a fight in over two years. These are another two competitors who are in a must win situation, but it will be Jackson returning to the win column.

Our first light heavyweight division bout of the card is next as Nick Nembherd (2-3-0) clashes with Simas Norkus (3-2-0). Nembherd has only won just one of his last four bouts and he is returning to action after a year-plus layoff. Norkus is currently undefeated in Cage Warriors competition, having defeated Stuart Tyrie at Cage Warriors 67. Norkus has turned his career around since coming to Cage Warriors and his turn around will continue when he defeats Nembherd.

Another lightweight division bout is next as Leon “Rocky” Del Gaudio (7-2-0) stands across the cage from Mario “Rude Boy” Saeed (5-2-0). Del Gaudio is returning to Cage Warriors after a two year absence, with his last promotional bout being a win over Mehmet Faulds at Cage Warriors 48. Saeed is currently winless in Cage Warriors competition, having dropped a bout to Sean Carter at Cage Warriors 67. Del Gaudio should have been competing in Cage Warriors for a while now and he will return to the promotion with another win.

Even more bantamweight division action is up next as Jordan Desborough (7-4-0) looks for the win against “Evil” Kris Edwards (8-7-0). Desborough has only won just one of three fights in Cage Warriors, with that lone win coming over Timur Mercanoglu at Cage Warriors 59. Edwards will enter the fight riding a four fight losing streak and he has not won a bout in over two years. These are two fighters who need a win if they want to stay in Cage Warriors and it will be Desborough getting that much needed win.

Yet another lightweight division bout is happening next as Steven Dinsdale (6-2-0) is set for action against Lewis “The Foot” Long (7-3-0). Dinsdale has only won just one of three fights in Cage Warriors, with that lone win coming over Dan Rushworth at Cage Warriors 57. Long has also won just one of three bouts in Cage Warriors, with his lone win coming over Mark Glover at Cage Warriors 54. These are two competitors who are fighting in a must win scenario and it will be Long getting that much needed victory.

Lightweight division action is still happening next as Mateusz “Gamer” Gamrot (6-0-0) has signed the contract to fight Tim “Super Human” Newman (10-4-0). Mateusz will be making his Cage Warriors debut in this fight and he holds a win over UFC veteran Andre Winner. Newman is returning to Cage Warriors after a two year break, but he has fought UFC veterans Curt Warburton and Colin Fletcher in between appearances. This fight has the potential to be a “fight of the night” candidate, but it will be Gamrot staying undefeated in the end.

Our next bout takes place in the middleweight division as Jack “The Hammer” Marshman (15-5-0) battles “Beautiful” Che Mills (16-7-0-2NC). Marshman will be looking to build off the momentum of his first Cage Warriors win, which came over Bola Omoyele at Cage Warriors 69. Mills has won just one of three fights since getting his UFC release, which came after a loss to Matthew Riddle at UFC On Fuel TV VII. Mills has not done to well for himself since his UFC exit and his losing ways will continue when Marshman picks up the win.

Up next is a bout for the vacant Cage Warriors Bantamweight Championship as Cory “Capcom” Tait (8-2-0) faces “Dynamite” Tori Tauru (9-1-1). Tait is currently undefeated in Cage Warriors competition, last defeating James Pennington at Cage Warriors 64. Tauru is also undefeated under the Cage Warriors banner, having defeated Martin Akhtar at Cage Warriors 66. These are the two best options for Cage Warriors to give a title shot to, but it will be Tait leaving as the new champion.

Headlining this card is a fight for the Cage Warriors Welterweight Title as champion Nicolas Dalby (12-0-0) defends against Gael Grimaud (19-6-0). Dalby will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating Sergei Churilov at Cage Warriors 66. Grimaud has won four of five fights under the Cage Warriors banner, most notably defeating UFC veteran Jesse Taylor at Cage Warriors Fighting Night VI. Dalby is a fighter who will be fighting in the bigger companies in due time and he will show why as he successfully defends the gold.
