UFC 178 FOX SPORTS 1 PRELIMINARY CARD PREVIEW

By David Tees on 9/25/2014 9:42 PM

Say what you want about the headlining fight, but this coming Saturday Night’s UFC 178 card will be an event worth checking out. The event is going to be headlined by a UFC Flyweight Title bout as champion Demetrious Johnson defends against Chris Cariaso. There are four fights on the Fox Sports 1 portion of the preliminary card, including the highly anticipated return of former UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz.

Kicking off the action is a welterweight division bout as Brian “Bad Boy” Ebersole (50-16-1-1NC) competes against John “Doomsday” Howard (22-9-0). Ebersole will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak and he is returning to action after a year layoff. Howard has won two of three fights in his second UFC run, most notably defeating Uriah Hall at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen. Howard has seen a career resurgence since returning to the UFC and that resurgence will continue when he defeats Ebersole.

More welterweight action is happening next as Patrick “The Predator” Cote (20-8-0) battles Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson (9-1-0). Cote will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, last defeating Kyle Noke at the UFC Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale. Thompson has won four of five fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Robert Whittaker at UFC 170. Thompson is quickly becoming a top contender in the welterweight division and his status will rise as he defeats the former TUF coach.

Up next is a lightweight division attraction as James “The James Krause” Krause (21-5-0) takes on Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal (27-8-0). Krause has won two of three fights during his UFC run, last defeating James Varner by TKO at UFC 173. Masvidal will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, most notably defeating Daron Cruickshank at UFC On Fox 12. This fight is a lot bigger fight than its position on the card suggests, but it will be Masvidal walking away with the win.

Headlining this portion of the card is a bantamweight division bout as Dominick “The Dominator” Cruz (19-1-0) faces Takeya Mizugaki (20-7-2). Cruz will be returning to action after a three year layoff and he is a former UFC Bantamweight Champion. Mizugaki will enter the fight riding a five fight winning streak, last defeating Francisco Rivera at UFC 173. It is good to see Cruz stepping back into the octagon, but that joy will be short lived as Mizugaki defeats him to win his sixth straight.
