UFC 178 PAY-PER-VIEW PREVIEW

By David Tees on 9/26/2014 11:36 AM

Capping off another extraordinary weekend off MMA action will this Saturday Night’s loaded UFC 178 card from Las Vegas, Nevada. The event will be headlined by a UFC Flyweight Title bout as Demetrious Johnson defends against Chris Cariaso. Also, former Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez makes his long anticipated UFC debut, plus Conor McGregor battles Dustin Poirier in a huge featherweight division bout.

Kicking off the action is a women’s bantamweight division bout as Amanda “Lioness” Nunes (9-3-0) competes against “Alpha” Cat Zingano (8-0-0). Nunes is currently undefeated in UFC competition, last defeating Germaine De Randamie at UFC Fights For The Troops III. Zingano is returning to action after a year-plus layoff due to injuries and personal matters, but she did defeat Miesha Tate at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. Zingano may have been out for a while now, but she was a title contender before her layoff and she will be one again when she defeats Nunes.

A pair of middleweights will collide next as Tim Kennedy (18-4-0) does battle against Yoel “Soldier Of God” Romero (8-1-0). Kennedy is currently undefeated in UFC competition, last defeating Michael Bisping at the UFC Ultimate Fighter Nations Finale. Romero is also undefeated in UFC competition, most notably defeating Brad Tavares by decision at UFC On Fox 11. The winner of this fight could be a title challenger in 2015 and it will be Romero’s wrestling that gets him the win.

Featherweight division action will be happening next as “Notorious” Conor McGregor (15-2-0) battles Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier (16-3-0). McGregor is coming off of a main event bout as UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Brandao, where he defeats Diego Brandao by TKO. Poirier will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, with notable wins coming off Diego Brandao and Erik Koch. This fight has the potential to be a “fight of the year” candidate and it will be McGregor staying undefeated in UFC competition in the end.

Up next is a lightweight division bout as Eddie Alvarez (25-3-0) takes on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (24-6-0-1NC). Alvarez will be making his UFC debut in this fight and he is a former two time Bellator Lightweight Champion. Cerrone will enter the fight riding a four fight winning streak and this fight will be his fourth octagon appearance of 2014. Alvarez’s UFC debut has been highly warranted for a long time now, but Cerrone will play the spoiler as he hands Alvarez a loss in his UFC debut.

Headlining this card is a UFC Flyweight Title bout as champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (20-2-1) defends against Chris “Kamikaze” Cariaso (17-5-0). Johnson will be making the fifth defense of his championship, last defending it against Ali Bagautinov at UFC 174. Cariaso will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, most notably defeating Louis Smolka at UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva. This could be the most lopsided title fight in UFC history and it will be Johnson leaving with his title in the end.
