AAW Defining Moment Report
9/12/2014 – Berwyn Eagles Club
By Qumar Zaman

Order had to be restored when AAW Pro Wrestling Redefined kicked off “Defining Moment” from the Berwyn Eagles Club. For months, the AAW Tag Team titles have been in limbo, split between former tag partners Michael Elgin and Ethan Page. So, AAW owner Jim Lynam hit the ring to clear the air about the situation involving the Tag Team Championship. Lynam announced that the titles were stripped from both Elgin and Page, and that to determine a new tag team champion, a one-night mini tournament will be held at next month’s “Jawbreaker” event in Berwyn.

After Lynam delivered the news, he was interrupted by former AAW Heritage Champion “Money” Matt Cage. Cage expressed his anger on how a lot has changed since he lost the Heritage title, his first loss in the company as well, to Heidi Lovelace last month at “All Hail”. Cage was unhappy that he had to face Jimmy Jacobs, instead of a chance to regain the title he had lost. Lynam then said that his match with Jacobs would be first up.

1.) Jacobs raced to the ring to begin the opening match of the night with Cage. The two men had opportunities to seize momentum, with Cage gaining the opening edge in the match. “Money” sure appeared like the same person that has competed in AAW, even without being a champion, as he displayed bravado and the brash behavior against his opponent.

Jimmy Jacobs was able to gain control of the match from the overzealous Cage. He tried to hit the Contra Code, but Cage was able to reverse and slyly hit his Money Clip finisher out of nowhere. Jacobs got back up immediately and delivered a spear to Cage, right after he turned around to face the music. Jacobs was seeking to capitalize on this opening, so he went to hit the Contra Code once more. He was successful this time, but only got a two-count. Seeking to put down Cage, Jacobs looked to hit another spear, however Cage reversed it by hitting a Codebreaker. Cage then picked up the stunned Jacobs and hit the Money Clip once again and got the three-count for the win.

After the match, we see a video of Bucky Collins who has joined up with The Hooligans. This dangerous trio looks to be ready to cause chaos within AAW.

2.) Mallaki Matthews joined up alongside newcomer “Dynamite” Pete Dunne as a tag team for this next match. Their opponents would be those same Hooligans along with their maniacal manager Bucky Collins. Matthews and Dunne stood toe to toe for the most part against Devin and Mason Cutter. However, the size advantage was very apparent. The Hooligans brought the physicality to their opponents and even impressed with their attack. One of the Cutter brothers went to the top rope and hit a legdrop, while the other brother hit a standing moonsault in combination.

One of the major unknowns in the match was “Dynamite” Pete Dunne, an Englishman who is bringing his skill set to an American audience. Dunne was taking a lot of punishment from The Hooligans, but at times he was dishing some back to his opponents. For all that Dunne and Matthews could muster together, it was not enough to combat the size and strength of The Hooligans. The Cutter brothers brought an end to the match with a colossal double team DDT to get their first win in AAW.

After the match, we see a video of AAW Heritage Champion Heidi Lovelace previewing her match against Davey Vega, who last month ended a losing streak with a big win to propel him into his title match tonight.

3.) The AAW Heritage Championship was on the line in the next match, as Heidi Lovelace had her first title defense as the new champ. Taking on Davey Vega in her first match as champion, Lovelace looked to prove that her win last month against “Money” Matt Cage was not by chance. It looked like the two combatants had a bit of mutual respect at the onset, as both shook hands. However, as the match progressed, Vega grew more and more frustrated at his inability to get a consistent offensive attack on Lovelace. When Lovelace extended her hand later in the match, Vega shoved it away. That upset Lovelace and she responded in kind with an assault of her own.

Towards the latter stages of the match, Vega tried to go high-risk with his attack. Vega and Lovelace stood on the middle turnbuckle, as it looked like he was about to hit a superplex. However, Lovelace countered with a headbutt to Vega, sending him back down to the mat. Lovelace climbed up to the top rope and hit a frog splash on the downed Vega, getting the three-count and retaining her title.

4.) The next match had youngster Paco Gonzalez taking on the massive Justice Jones, along with Knight Wagner. This time, Wagner brought some female accompaniment with him in the form of Ariel. Wagner got on the microphone before the match started. Wagner is still out after dealing with his concussion and showing off his new suit, as well as Ariel. While Wagner was still talking down to the crowd in Berwyn, Jones was in a hurry to beat up his opponent, so he viciously slapped Paco.

The ring cleared and the match began, and Paco might have wished it hadn’t started. Justice Jones delivered punishment to Paco with fury. Jones even took the attack to the outside, delivering successive powerbombs to Paco, with the first coming off the guardrail and the next on the steel ring steps. Even when Paco tried to mount some offense, Jones came back with an indefensible attack to Paco. Jones mercifully put this match away to get the victory. In his celebration, Jones made it clear that he wants to claim some gold in AAW.

After the match, we see a video of Arik Cannon talking about Gregory Iron’s Iron Curtain. Cannon is looking forward to his match against Iron Curtain member Christian Faith. Cannon adds that their match will be a Berwyn Street Fight.

5.) The following match was a dream match for fans of independent wrestling not just in the Chicagoland area, but the entire United States. Johnny Gargano took on Tommaso Ciampa in Ciampa’s debut match in AAW. The two men made this more of a psychological battle, which goes right into the wheelhouse of Ciampa. Both men showcased solid work both inside and outside the ring.

One of Ciampa’s more devastating maneuvers is his repeated running knees to his opponent, while they are down in the corner. He managed to utilize that attack on Gargano in their match, as well as hitting his Project Ciampa powerbomb/backbreaker combination. Gargano was able to provide some attacks of his own against Gargano, evening the barrage he was taking.

Gargano had been working on Ciampa’s arm throughout the match, as he looked to synch in his Garga-No Escape submission maneuver. Gargano tried several times to lock it in on Ciampa, but Ciampa would either break out of the move or reach the ropes. This last time though, Gargano got a perfect hold right in the middle of the ring. With nowhere to go, Ciampa had no choice but to tap out, ending a fantastic match that lasted nearly 20 minutes.

After the match, we see a video of AAW Heavyweight Champion Shane Hollister promising to retain his title in his match against Eddie Kingston, and proclaiming that he will remain on the throne in AAW.

6.) Gregory Iron and his Iron Curtain hit the ring. Iron explains that Dick Justice is no longer a part of the Curtain, and given his two-strike warning last month at “All Hail”, it appeared to be a formality. One of the members of the Iron Curtain, Christian Faith, was ready to take on Arik Cannon, who has had to deal with the Curtain in months prior.

Cannon raced to the ring to begin the Berwyn Street Fight against Faith. Obviously, the numbers put Cannon at a disadvantage with Iron, Joey Martini, and Benjamin Boone all on the outside. Meanwhile, as is the norm with street fights, weaponry was in play. A kendostick and several steel chairs were the weapons of choice in this one. Cannon used the kendostick a few times against Faith, and hit a pair of devastating suplexes onto the chairs.

Faith was able to regroup and take control of the fight, hitting Cannon with a steel chair. In order to provide further damage, Faith went scrounging around to find something more devastating and came out with a ring of barbed wire. Cannon got back up and forced Faith to drop the barbed wire to the mat. In the ensuing battle, Cannon won out by dropping Faith onto the barbed wire, stinging his back. Sensing their partner was down for the count, Martini and Boone dragged the referee out of the ring and got involved in the match, creating a 3-on-1 attack. Marek Brave then rushed to the ring to help out Cannon, and eventually forced Martini and Boone to the back.

In an attempt to deliver a sneak attack, Iron crawled into the ring and grabbed a chair looking to hit Cannon from behind. But, Iron took too long and Cannon turned around and grabbed the chair from Iron. While that was happening, Faith was up and hit a forearm to the chair that Cannon was holding, thus getting the chair right to his head and knocking him out. Faith covered Cannon for the pin and got the win.

7.) Following intermission, there was an 8-man tag team match. The first team brought together Markus Crane and Dan Lawrence along with Tweek Phoenix and Keith Walker, who were joined by Nikki Mayday. They were opposed by Marion Fontaine, Louis Lyndon, and Zero Gravity. To begin the match, Marion Fontaine took on Tweek Phoenix. The match devolved into a full-on 4-on-4 battle. Lawrence, Phoenix, and Walker were on the outside, as their opponents were inside the ring. Markus Crane tried to sneak attack his four opponents, but in his running attempt to attack them, he was thrown at his three tag partners.

As the match progressed, the monster of the match, Keith Walker, was taking out his aggression on CJ Esparza of Zero Gravity. Walker delivered one of his devastating chops to the chest of Esparza, and it took him out of the fight for a bit. Walker continued his dominance a few moments later when he reversed a two-man suplex attempt against him into a double suplex on Fontaine and Miller. Then, he picked up both Esparza and Brett Gakiya into a fireman’s carry position and flung them down to the mat.

Later, there was a rapid progression of tags as all 8 men went in and out of the match. Amidst all the chaos, Bucky Collins brought The Hooligans with him to ringside. Zero Gravity went after them, diving to the outside, as those four men battled to the back. That left Miller and Fontaine alone in a 2-on-4 disadvantage. Marion Fontaine was the one receiving the attack, and eventually Markus Crane took the pinfall, holding the ropes out of the sight of the referee, and got the victory.

After the match, we see a video of Eddie Kingston talking about his time in AAW and how much fun he had in his rivalry with Silas Young in the past. He’s looking forward to seriously beating up AAW Heavyweight Champion Shane Hollister in the main event.

8.) Next up was a tag team match pitting the team of ACH and Louis Lyndon against the Monster Mafia of the “Walking Weapon” Josh Alexander and “All Ego” Ethan Page. With the upcoming tag team title tournament, both teams proved that they should be considered to be involved. The Monster Mafia was right on the doorstep of sharing the glory during the Allegiance tag team tournament earlier in the year. ACH and Louis Lyndon have both held gold in AAW, and in their recent pairing, they look to have innovated their styles to fit the team mold.

This match not only offered all four men a chance to prove their worth, but how their individual skill sets make them some of the best independent wrestlers going today. Alexander uses his strength and power against his opponents. Page uses his guile and agility to best deliver his attack. Lyndon and ACH both execute some high flying maneuvers and show off their quickness inside and outside the ring. But, the best teams usually come out on top, and in this instance, it was the Monster Mafia. The match came to a powerful close as both Alexander and Page held ACH upside down on the ropes, as they hit a 2-man Styles Clash falling from the corner to the mat. Alexander made the pinfall on ACH to get the victory, concluding a masterful tag team match.

9.) In the main event, the AAW Heavyweight Champion Shane Hollister, who was joined by Scarlett, defended his title against Eddie Kingston. The bad blood between both men came to a head as the match began, leaving the audience captivated in the all-out assault. Kingston surprised many when he perfectly executed a superplex on Hollister.

Both men traded attacks, utilizing Kingston’s patented backfist, but neither could get the three-count. They went back and forth trying to keep the other down, but Hollister had the trump card in his back pocket in the form of Scarlett. She tried a few times in the match to get Kingston’s attention, but he paid her no mind. However, on the last occasion, Kingston got out of the way of a racing Hollister. Hollister was aiming to missile kick Kingston, but he knocked down Scarlett, who was standing on the apron. The distraction allowed for Kingston to strike, hitting a suplex and then consecutive backfists to Hollister, knocking him out. Kingston made the cover and got that three-count he was seeking, thus becoming the new AAW Heavyweight Champion!

Kingston got on the microphone after the match, dedicating his win to his mother, whose poor health caused him to miss his scheduled match with Hollister last month. He also made it a point to reaffirm to any doubters that the independent wrestling scene is not dead and that he was proof of it.
