BATTLEGROUNDS MMA: ONE NON-TOURNAMENT FIGHTS PREVIEW

By David Tees on 9/30/2014 9:13 AM

This coming Friday Night will easily see the biggest event in the history of the Battlegrounds MMA promotion as they make their pay-per-view debut. The show will feature a one night, eight man welterweight tournament with some of the best welterweights in MMA competing. Outside of the tournament, there are four fights that should be catching the attention of MMA fans as well.

Kicking off the action is a bantamweight division fight as Chris “El Guapo” Gutierrez (4-1-0) competes against Tyler Shinn (6-2-0). Gutierrez will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, most notably defeating Justin McNally at Bellator 111. Shinn has won three of his last four fights and he has previously stepped into the cage against UFC veteran Chris Holdsworth. These are two competitors who have already fought some top notch MMA talent at this early stage of their careers, but it will be Gutierrez getting his third straight win in the end.

A pair of featherweights will collide next as Jamal Parks (3-0-0) stands across the cage from Ruben Warr (3-3-0). Parks has spent his entire career in the C3 Fights promotion, but he is returning to action after a year layoff. Warr has won three of his last four fights and he has previously challenged for the Xplode Fight Series Featherweight Title. Warr has seen himself go on quite the run after a sluggish start to his pro career and he will upset Parks to keep his streak going.

The women’s atomweight division will be featured next as Jen “Tink” Aniano (0-2-0) takes on Nicdali “The Night Queen” Rivera-Calanoc (8-7-0). Aniano is currently winless as a professional MMA fighter, but she did fight TUF alumni Rose Namajunas as an amateur. Rivera-Calanoc has only won just one of her last four fights, with that lone win coming over Angelica Chavez at Invicta FC II. This fight is easily one of the biggest mismatches to come along in a while now and it will be Rivera-Calanoc breezing to an easy win.

Up next is a welterweight division affair as Jonny “The King Of Late Night” Carson (11-6-0) battles Danny Navarro (11-4-0). Carson is returning to action after a seventeen month layoff, but he does have some experience competing in Bellator MMA. Navarro will enter the fight on an eleven fight winning streak and he has not lost a fight in well over five years. Carson is vastly overmatched in this fight, especially after the long layoff, Navarro will get his twelfth straight win here.

Headlining the non-tournament bouts is a welterweight tournament reserve fight as Marcus Sanchez (4-0-0) faces Jordan “Mata Ele” Smith (18-7-1). Sanchez has already competed twice in Battlegrounds MMA, defeating both Bert Ramos and Kemmyelle Haley. Smith has only won just one of his last six fights, with that lone win coming over Colton Vaughn at Rage In The Cage VII. Smith has been on quite the downfall in recent years and that downfall will continue as Sanchez gets the biggest win of his career.
