The UFC is returning to their seemingly favorite overseas country in Brazil this weekend as the promotion presents UFC 179. The event will be headlined by a featherweight title rematch as Jose Aldo again defends against Chad Mendes. There will be four fights on the Fox Sports 1 portion of the preliminary card, with one of 2014’s more active fighters in Neil Magny taking the featured spot.
Kicking off the action is a featherweight division bout as Felipe “Sertanejo†Arantes (16-6-1-2NC) competes against Andre “Touchy†Fili (13-2-0). Arantes has won two of his last three under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Maximo Blanco at UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Mousasi. Fili will be looking to rebound from his first UFC defeat, which came to Max Holloway by submission at UFC 172. Fili is one of the better prospects in the featherweight division right now and he will rebound from his last loss to get the win over Arantes.
A flyweight division affair is happening next as Scott “Young Guns†Jorgensen (15-9-0) battles Wilson Reis (18-5-0). Jorgensen has won just one of three bouts since dropping to featherweight, with that lone win coming over Danny Martinez at UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Khabilov. Reis has won two of three fights under the UFC banner, last defeating Joby Sanchez at UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Dos Anjos. Reis is starting to hit his stride in the UFC and he will get his third straight win in the promotion on Saturday Night.
Up next is a welterweight division attraction as Yan Cabral (11-1-0) will be taking on Naoyuki Kotani (33-11-7). Cabral will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came to Zak Cummings at UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva. Kotani is currently winless under the UFC banner, having dropped a fight to Norman Parke at UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Brandao. This is a must win situation for both competitors in this one, but it will be Cabral walking away with that much needed win.
Headlining this portion of the card is a welterweight division bout as William “Patolino†Macario (7-1-0) faces Neil Magny (12-3-0). Macario will be looking to build on the momentum of his first UFC win, which came over Bobby Voelker at UFC 168. Magny will be entering the fight riding a four fight winning streak and this fight will be his fifth bout of 2014. Magny is one of the better surprises in the UFC in 2014 and he will cap off an extraordinary 2014 in the promotion by defeating Macario.
