UFC 179 PAY-PER-VIEW PREVIEW

By David Tees on 10/24/2014 9:50 AM

Capping off another weekend full of MMA action will be another trip to Brazil for the UFC as the promotion presents UFC 179. The event will be headlined by a rematch for the featherweight title as Jose Aldo again defends against Chad Mendes. Also, Glover Teixeira faces Phil Davis and Fabio Maldonado returns to light heavyweight after a one fight shot at heavyweight.

Kicking off the action is a lightweight division bout as Beneil Dariush (8-1-0) competes against Carlos Diego Ferreira (11-0-0). Dariush has won two of three fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Charlie Brenneman at UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Philippou. Ferreira has already competed twice in the UFC, including a win over UFC Ultimate Fighter 16 Champion Colton Smith. Ferreira has been blowing through competitors since entering the UFC and that is going to happen again as he defeats Dariush.

The featherweight division will be featured next as Darren Elkins (17-4-0) does battle against Lucas “Mineiro” Martins (15-1-0). Elkins has only won just one of his last three under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Hatsu Hioki at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann II. Martins will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, last defeating Alex White at UFC Fight Night: Cerrone vs. Miller. Martins is quickly becoming a prospect to watch in the featherweight division and his stock will rise as he defeats Elkins in this one.

A light heavyweight division attraction is next as Fabio “Caipira De Aco” Maldonado (21-7-0) battles Hans Stringer (22-5-3). Maldonado has won three of his last four fights, with that lone loss coming during a one fight stint as a heavyweight against Stipe Miocic. Stringer is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Francimar Barroso at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson II. Maldonado is a fighter who is known for taking a beating and Stringer will deal him another beating to stay undefeated in the UFC.

Up next is a light heavyweight division bout as “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis (12-2-0-1NC) takes on Glover Teixeira (22-3-0). Davis has won three of his last four bouts, but he will be looking to rebound from a loss to Anthony Johnson at UFC 172. Teixeira will be competing for the first time since losing to UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones at UFC 172. This is a must win bout if either fighter wants to stay in title contention and it will be Teixeira staying in contention when he picks up the victory.

Headlining this card is a UFC Featherweight Title bout as champion Jose “Scarface” Aldo (24-1-0) defends against Chad “Money” Mendes (16-1-0). Aldo has already defended the gold against Mendes once, which was a knockout victory back at UFC 142. Mendes has won five straight fights since that loss to Aldo, most notably defeating Clay Guida at UFC 164. Mendes’s striking game has improved vastly since that first meeting with Aldo, but Aldo is still light years ahead of Aldo in that department and he will hold onto the gold.
