SWANSON ON HIS TITLE SHOT: “THERE’S NO DENYING ME AFTER THIS.”

Swanson, Edgar and Rogan Interviews on UFC TONIGHT

LOS ANGELES, CA – On UFC TONIGHT, hosts Kenny Florian and Daniel Cormier preview UFC FIGHT NIGHT: EDGAR VS. SWANSON and interview headliners Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson. Plus, they also talk to UFC announcer Joe Rogan. Helwani and Bryant add reports.

UFC TONIGHT Host Daniel Cormier on what Cub Swanson needs to do against Frankie Edgar to get title shot: “He has to dominate the ring. If he allows Frankie to fight at his pace, he will have problem. He believes he’ll have the speed advantage, but Edgar is very fast. Cub also has to defend takedowns and he has to punch with him. Frankie punches at a great pace. Frankie is more active than the other guys he fights.”

UFC TONIGHT Host Florian on Edgar’s keys to winning: “I believe Cub has the speed to stand with him, but sometimes Cub gets too aggressive, and that opens him up to takedowns. With Frankie’s wrestling, can’t do that. Edgar’s keys are he has to push the pace, utilize the angles and land the takedown.”

Cormier on Swanson’s keys to winning the fight: “Cub has to use his reach. He has to keep it standing and keep Frankie from taking him down. He has to look for the finish and make a statement for the title shot.”

Frankie Edgar on how he has to beat Swanson: “I have to be myself. He’s cocky and he’s got heavy hands. I have to stay technical and smart.”

Edgar on not getting the title shot if he beats Swanson, while Swanson gets it if he wins: “I’m not focused on any of that. If I don’t win this fight, none of that matters. I’ve got to win this fight, then I go bug Dana about that.”

Edgar on if too many other guys are getting the attention in the division: “Lots of guys are talking. They’re following Conor’s lead. I’m just going to let my fighting speak for myself and make it so they have to give me my shot.”

Edgar on if Conor McGregor hasn’t been tested by a true wrestler yet: “He’s going to be eventually, then we’ll all have the answers. There’re still lots of unknowns. He’s handling it tremendously. But he hasn’t been in deep water and hasn’t fought a wrestler yet.”

Cub Swanson on if he’ll be fighting for the title with a win over Edgar: “No matter what anyone says, I feel like if I win this I’m fighting for the title. If feel the fans will back me up and there’s no denying me after this.”

Swanson on how he stops Edgar: “I’m going to try to finish him. Going five rounds is never fun. The guys he’s fought at 155 had power, but I’ve got speed and power and I’m going to try to knock him out.”

Swanson on what’s changed for him over the years: “The belief in myself. I’ve traveled around and learned a lot of different styles. It took me a long time learn my style and technique, believing in myself and believing I belong there.”

Swanson if he has to win the title to make his career worth it: “To explain to people what I do, yeah. If you’re a champ, it’s an easy way to make your case. But also fighting best of the best, I could have sat out, but I had the chance to fight Frankie Edgar, one of the best. I’m a fighter.”

Joe Rogan on what makes a superstar like Ronda Rousey: “She’s not just a once in a lifetime athlete, she’s a once ever. She’s so dominant. She’s not just a really beautiful girl just getting by, she’s smashing people. Conor McGregor is a dynamo, a great talker and is so confident. He has unique moves. He’s so loose and confident. He says he’ll knock people out in first round and does. He’s a legit superstar.”

Rogan on the biggest change from when he started to now: “The level of athlete’s skill. I started off the postfight interview in UFC 12 in 1997 and Vitor was there, and he’s still fighting. I don’t know how he keeps his motivation and not just training, but also mentally.”

Rogan on staying so excited to call the fights all year: “I do it out of joy, not as a job. DC, I am so excited about your fight with Jon Jones. I don’t like sports like football. I get bored. The stakes have to be really high. Mixed martial arts is the highest level of competition human beings can be in besides war.”

UFC TONIGHT Insider Ariel Helwani on Luke Rockhold’s new contract: “Luke Rockhold had a meeting with UFC and was giving a new eight-fight deal. Dana White says they’re giving him a big fight next. He’ll fight one more time before getting a shot at the belt.”

Helwani on who Ovince Saint Preux wants to fight next: “Ovince Saint Preux wants to return late winter and wants a fight against Phil Davis. Davis just told me he’s not seriously injured and wants to get back in there as soon as possible. He doesn’t care who he fights next.”

Helwani on T.J. Dillashaw return: “I spoke to his manager and he said they want the Dominick Cruz fight in either February or March.”

Helwani on who Ricardo Lamas wants to fight next: “Ricardo Lamas wants to fight Conor McGregor. If anything happens to Dennis Siver, he’ll jump in there in January and he thinks Conor needs to fight a wrestler.”

Helwani on injury updates: “Michael McDonald had wrist surgery last week and hopes to come back in spring 2015. Bethe Correia suffered a detached retina and had surgery on right eye three weeks ago. She hopes to come back in March.”
