UFC FIGHT NIGHT 58 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 12/19/2014 8:19 PM

The final MMA event of 2014 is upon us and MMA fans are in for a treat as UFC Fight Night 58 is a loaded card that will give fans an early Christmas present. The event will be headlined by a huge middleweight division bout as former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida faces CB Dollaway. Also, former UFC Bantamweight Champion Renan Barao faces Mitch Gagnon and Patrick Cummins returns to the octagon.

Main Card

Main Event

UFC Middleweight Division Fight

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (21-5-0) vs. CB “The Doberman” Dollaway (15-5-0)

Machida will be competing for the first time since losing to UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman at UFC 175. Dollaway is actually undefeated when competing in Brazil, having defeated Brazilian’s Daniel Sarafian and Cezar Ferreira. Machida will be competing in his fourth straight five round fight, but only one of those previous bouts was a title bout (UFC 175). Dollaway will be getting his first main event opportunity in the UFC and Machida is the first former title holder that Dollaway has ever faced. Dollaway is going to have to wisely pick his spots against the always patient striker in Machida, Machida will eventually land the blow to TKO Dollway in the fourth.

Co-Main Event

UFC Bantamweight Division Fight

Renan “The Baron” Barao (32-2-0-1NC) vs. Mitch Gagnon (12-2-0)

Barao is fighting for the first time since losing his UFC Bantamweight Title to TJ Dillashaw via fifth round TKO at UFC 173. Gagnon will enter the fight riding a four fight winning streak and he has not dropped a fight in just about three years. Barao will also be competing for the first time since his failed weight cut cost him a rematch against Dillashaw at UFC 177 (Joe Soto got the title shot instead). Gagnon also fought a little over two months ago, having defeated Roman Salazar at UFC Fight Night: MacDonald vs. Saffiedine. Barao has (hopefully) fixed his weight cutting issues and if he did, he should easily knockout a vastly under matched Gagnon is the first round.

UFC Light Heavyweight Division Fight

Antonio “Cara De Sapato” Carlos Jr. (4-0-0) vs. Patrick “Durkin” Cummins (6-1-0)

Carlos Jr. has already competed once under the UFC banner, as he defeated Vitor Miranda by unanimous decision at the UFC Ultimate Fighter Brazil III Finale. Cummins has won two of three fights during his time in the UFC, with his lone loss coming to UFC Light Heavyweight Title challenger in Daniel Cormier. Carlos Jr. is a capable fighter, but Cummins unrelenting wrestling game will smother Carlos Jr. as he cruises to a decision win.

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Rashid “Highlander” Magomedov (17-1-0) vs. Elias “Xuxu” Silverio (11-0-0)

Magomedov is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated both Tony Martin and Rodrigo Damm respectively. Silverio has already competed three times under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Isaac Vallie-Flagg at UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Philippou. The fighters are known for dragging their fights into deep waters, but Magomedov will use his striking skills to notch a decision over Silverio.

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Mike “Biggie” Rhodes (6-3-0) vs. Erick “Indio” Silva (16-5-0-1NC)

Rhodes is currently winless in UFC competition, however he is a former Resurrection Fighting Alliance Welterweight Champion. Silva has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC career, with his last fight being a loss to Matt Brown at UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva. Silva has a hard time winning fights when they go past round one, which is what Rhodes will do to Silva to get the decision.

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Antonio “Junior Alpha” Dos Santos Jr. (6-1-0) vs. Daniel Sarafian (8-5-0)

Dos Santos Jr. will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he competed less than a month ago at Jungle Fight 74. Sarafian has only won just one of four fights under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Eddie Mendes at UFC On Fuel TV X. Sarafian has to be on his last legs in the UFC right now, but he will use his wrestling skills to defeat the recently active Dos Santos Jr.

Preliminary Card

Igor Pokrajac over Marcos Rogerio De Lima

Tom Niinimaki over Renato Carneiro

Darren Elkins over Hacran Dias

Leandro Issa over Yuta Sasaki

Tim Means over Marcio Alexandre Jr.

Jake Collier over Vitor Miranda
