Women’s MMA action is a plenty this weekend, but nothing will be bigger than Ronda Rousey defending her women’s bantamweight title against Cat Zingano in the main event of UFC 184. The women will be featured in the co-main event as well with former professional boxing champion Holly Holm making her UFC debut against TUF alumni Raquel Pennington. Also, Josh Koscheck faces Jake Ellenberger in a key welterweight bout and TUF Champion Tony Ferguson competes.
Main Card
Main Event
UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title Fight
“Rowdy†Ronda Rousey (10-0-0) (Champion) vs. “Alpha†Cat Zingano (9-0-0)
Rousey will be making the sixth defense of her championship, last defending it against Alexis Davis at UFC 179. Zingano has already competed twice under the UFC banner, defeating former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate and Amanda Nunes. Of her ten bouts as a professional MMA fighter, Rousey has only seen one of them go past the first round, which was her second bout against Miesha Tate at UFC 168. Zingano has a big edge when compared to TKO/KO finishes when compared to Rousey, as Zingano has five compared to Rousey’s two. Zingano is a slow starter who is known for improving as the fight goes on, but Rousey will not allow that to happen as she submits Zingano in the first.
Co-Main Event
UFC Women’s Bantamweight Division Fight
Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter†Holm (7-0-0) vs. Raquel “Rocky†Pennington (5-4-0)
Holm will be making her highly anticipated UFC debut in this fight and she is a former Legacy FC Women’s Bantamweight Champion. Pennington has won two of three fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Roxanne Modaferri at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. Holm will also be returning to action after being away for nearly a year to deal with a serious neck injury. Prior to coming to the UFC in 2013, Pennington had already fought a pair of UFC veterans in Cat Zingano and Leslie Smith, both fights coming under the Invicta FC banner. Holm is easily the most dangerous puncher when compared to every other woman in the UFC, she uses that to defeat Pennington via first round TKO.
UFC Welterweight Division Fight
Jake “The Juggernaut†Ellenberger (29-9-0) vs. Josh “Kos†Koscheck (17-8-0)
Ellenberger will be entering the fight on a three fight losing streak and he has not earned a victory in just about two years. Koscheck will also enter the bout on a three fight losing streak, with two of those losses coming to current and/or past UFC Welterweight Champions. Koscheck’s chin has gone the way of the dodo in recent bouts, Ellenberger brutalizes him with strikes to get a second round TKO.
UFC Welterweight Division Fight
Alan “Brahma†Jouban (10-3-0) vs. Richard “Filthy Rich†Walsh (8-2-0)
Jouban will be looking to rebound from his first UFC defeat, which was a controversial decision loss to Warlley Alves at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. St. Preux. Walsh is another fighter who is looking to rebound from his first UFC loss, which came to Kiichi Kunimoto at UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Nelson. Jouban is quickly developing into a dangerous striker and he will use that striking to keep Walsh at a distance to earn the decision.
UFC Lightweight Division Fight
Tony “El Cucuy†Ferguson (17-3-0) vs. Gleison Tibau (33-10-0)
Ferguson will enter the bout riding a four fight winning streak and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 13. Tibau is a late replacement in this fight, but he has won five of his last six fights under the UFC banner. Ferguson is one of the better boxers in the lightweight division right now and he will use that boxing to avoid the Tibau takedown attempts to get a decision win.
