While the card may be a little light on star power, this Saturday Night’s UFC Fight Night 62 card will still be one worth checking out. The event will be headlined by a key welterweight division bout as Damien Maia faces the undefeated Ryan LaFlare. Also, Josh Koscheck faces Erick Silva and Shayna Baszler looks for her first win under the UFC banner against Amanda Nunes.
Main Card
Main Event
UFC Welterweight Division Fight
Ryan LaFlare (11-0-0) vs. Damien Maia (19-6-0)
LaFlare has already won four bouts under the UFC banner, with notable wins coming over John Howard and Court McGee. Maia has only won just one of his last three bouts under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Alexander Yakovlev at the UFC Ultimate Fighter Brazil III Finale. Prior to coming to the UFC in 2013, LaFlare competed in the Ring Of Combat promotion, where he earned finishes in all seven of his fights there. Maia will be headlining a show for the first time in just about two years, as his last headlining bout was a loss to Jake Shields at UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields. LaFlare always moving forward style will cause problems for Maia, LaFlare gets the decision win here.
Co-Main Event
UFC Welterweight Division Fight
Josh “Kos†Koscheck (17-9-0) vs. Erick “Indio†Silva (17-5-0-1NC)
Koscheck will be entering the fight on a four fight losing streak and the fighter has not won a bout in over three years. Silva has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC run, with his last fight being a win over Mike Rhodes at UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Dollaway. Koscheck is actually a last minute replacement in this fight, as he is replacing the injured Ben Saunders. It has been nearly three years since Silva had a fight go to a decision, as the last time that happened was at UFC 153 in 2012. Koscheck’s chin cannot take a shot no longer, Silva will barrage him with strikes on route to getting a first round finish.
UFC Lightweight Division Fight
Tony Martin (9-2-0) vs. Leonardo Santos (13-3-1)
Martin has only won just one of three fights under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Fabricio Camoes at UFC 179. Santos is currently undefeated in UFC competition, most notably defeating Efrain Escudero at UFC Fight Night: Bigfoot vs. Arlovski II. The majority of this fight should be contested on the ground, which is where Santos will earn a close decision.
UFC Women’s Bantamweight Division Fight
Shayna “The Queen Of Spades†Baszler (15-9-0) vs. Amanda “Lioness†Nunes (9-4-0)
Baszler is currently winless under the UFC banner, having dropped a fight to Bethe Correia via TKO at UFC 177. Nunes has won two of three fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Germaine De Randamie at UFC Fights For The Troops III. Baszler is unfortunately past her prime when compared to the new wave of female MMA, Nunes uses her striking to get the first round finish.
UFC Lightweight Division Fight
Gilbert “Durinho†Burns (9-0-0) vs. Alex “Cowboy†Oliveira (10-1-1-1NC)
Burns has already achieved two victories under the UFC banner, last defeating Christos Giagos at UFC 179. Oliveira will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he has competed against UFC veteran Wendell De Oliveira. Burns is one of the better lightweight prospects to come around in a while now, Burns gets the quick first round finish on Oliveira.
UFC Featherweight Division Fight
Andre “Touchy†Fili (14-2-0) vs. Godofredo Pepey (11-3-0)
Fili has won two of three bouts under the UFC banner, with a notable win coming over Felipe Arantes at UFC 179. Pepey will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, last defeating Dashon Johnson by submission at UFC Fight Night: Bigfoot vs. Arlovski II. Fili will have a huge reach advantage when compared to Pepey and he will use that range to out strike his opponent to earn a decision.
Preliminary Card
Francisco Trinaldo over Akbarh Arreola
Kevin Souza over Katsunori Kikuno
Drew Dober over Leandro Silva
Cain Carrizosa over Leonardo Mafra
Christos Giagos over Jorge De Oliveira
