By David Tees on 4/23/2015 10:40 AM

The explosion of women’s MMA in recent years is not just due to the fact that the UFC added women to the roster, it is also due to the fact that promotions like Invicta FC brought female MMA to the forefront of the MMA universe. Invicta FC 12 is another card that will feature top female MMA action, with Katja Kankaanpaa defending her strawweight title against Livia Renata Souza in the main event. Also, Roxanne Modafferi will again battle Vanessa Porto, while Ediane Gomes returns to Invicta FC and UFC veteran Peggy Morgan is in action.

(Note: There is no main card or preliminary card for the event, so each fight on the card will be previewed in full.)

Main Event

Invicta FC Strawweight Title Fight

Katja “Killer Bunny” Kankaanpaa (10-1-1) (Champion) vs. Livia Renata “Livinho” Souza (7-0-0)

Kankaanpaa will be making the first defense of her championship, which she won by defeating Stephanie Eggink at Invicta FC VIII. Souza will be making her Invicta FC debut in this fight, but she is a veteran of both Predator FC and X-Fight MMA in Brazil. Kankaanpaa has fought two UFC veterans during her twelve fight MMA career, defeating Aisling Daly and suffering a defeat to Joanne Calderwood. Souza has only seen one of her seven professional MMA bouts go to a decision and that was back in October 2013. Kankaanpaa’s strength is getting the fight to the ground, which is where Souza is a more dangerous fighter, Souza gets a submission in round three to win the title.

Co-Main Event

Invicta FC Flyweight Division Fight

Roxanne “The Happy Warrior” Modafferi (17-11-0) vs. Vanessa Porto (17-6-0)

Modafferi has been undefeated thus far in Invicta FC competition, defeating both Andrea Lee and Tara LaRosa. Porto has rotated wins and losses throughout her Invicta FC run, with her last fight being a win over Zoila Frausto at Invicta FC VII. Modafferi already holds a win over Porto, which happened win TKO at Fatal Femmes Fighting IV in April 2008. Porto once challenged for the Invicta FC Flyweight Title, but suffered a decision defeat to Barb Honchak at Invicta FC V. Modafferi’s best chance at winning is to use her striking to keep Porto at range, but Porto will eventually score the takedowns on route to a decision win.

Invicta FC Featherweight Division Fight

Amanda “The Lady Killer” Bell (3-2-0) vs. Faith “The Immortal” Van Duin (4-1-0)

Bell will enter the fight riding a three fight winning streak, which includes a win over Four Horsewoman Marina Shafir. Van Duin will be making her Invicta FC debut in this fight and she is a former Storm MMA Women’s Featherweight Champion. Bell got a lot of notoriety after defeating Shafir, but Van Duin in the better-rounded fighter and she will get the decision over Bell.

Invicta FC Bantamweight Division Fight

Ediane “India” Gomes (10-3-0) vs. Raquel “Rocky” Pa’aluhi (4-4-0)

Gomes will be looking to rebound from a huge upset loss to Tonya Evinger, which came via submission at Invicta FC VIII. Pa’aluhi will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak and she has already competed against three different UFC veterans. Pa’aluhi brings a lot of heart to the cage, but Gomes is a monster and Gomes will get a quick sub of Pa’aluhi in the first.

Invicta FC Featherweight Division Fight

Peggy “The Daywalker” Morgan (3-2-0) vs. Latoya “Black Mamba” Walker (4-0-0)

Morgan has won just one of two fights under the Invicta FC banner, with that lone win coming over Andria Wawro at Invicta FC X. Walker will be making her Invicta FC debut in this fight ans she is the current Sugar Creek Showdown Women’s Featherweight Champion. Morgan is a tall fighter who never seems to use her long reach to her advantage, Walker uses her striking skills to finish Morgan in the second.

Invicta FC Strawweight Division Fight

Lacey “The Ladie” Schuckman (10-8-0) vs. Jenny Liou Shriver (3-1-0)

Schuckman will be returning to Invicta FC after a two-plus year absence, last competing in the promotion against former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion Michelle Waterson. Shriver is currently winless under the Invicta FC banner, having dropped a fight to Jamie Moyle at Invicta FC IX. Schuckman has a huge experience edge when compared to Shriver, Schuckman uses her wrestling to notch a decision win.

Invicta FC Strawweight Division Fight

Delaney “Lil’ Scrappy” Owen (3-1-0) vs. Sharon Jacobson (2-1-0)

Owen is currently winless under the Invicta FC banner, having dropped a bout to JJ Aldrich at Invicta FC VIII. Jacobson will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak and none of her bouts have gone past the opening round. This bout will come down to Owen’s ability to get the fight to the ground, which she will to submit Jacobson in the first.

Invicta FC Flyweight Division Fight

Shannon Sinn (1-2-0) vs. Maureen “Baby Face” Riordon (0-1-0)

Sinn will enter the fight riding a two fight losing streak, which includes a loss in her Invicta FC debut back at Invicta FC IX. Riordon is currently winless as a professional MMA fighter, dropping a fight to UFC veteran Marion Reneau at Resurrection Fighting Alliance 16. Little is known about either fighter at this stage of their careers, Sinn should have enough in the tank to earn a decision.

Invicta FC Bantamweight Division Fight

Gina “Jellybean” Begley (0-0-0) vs. Sijara Eubanks (0-0-0)

Begley has won three of five fights as an amateur, notably defeating fellow Invicta FC veteran Shannon Sinn at Resurrection Fighting Alliance VII. Begley is a late addition to the fight as she is replacing the injured Roma Pawelek, Eubanks will squeak out a decision in this one.
