The UFC returns to the land down under for another event featuring some top ranked MMA competitors. The event will be headlined by a key heavyweight division battle as Mark Hunt faces Stipe Miocic. Also, Brad Tavares faces Robert Whittaker and Australian MMA legend Anthony Perosh looks for another win.
Main Card
Main Event
UFC Heavyweight Division Fight
“The Super Samoan†Mark Hunt (10-9-1) vs. Stipe Miocic (12-2-0)
Hunt will be competing for the first time since losing a UFC Interim Heavyweight Title bout to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180. Miocic has won three of his last four under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Roy Nelson at UFC 161. The last two defeats that Hunt has suffered came to past UFC Heavyweight Champions in Junior Dos Santos and the aforementioned Werdum. Miocic will be headlining his third straight UFC event, as he previously headlined UFC On Fox 14 and the UFC Ultimate Fighter Brazil III Finale. Miocic has a great striking game, but he does not use his range properly and Hunt will exploit that to get a third round finish.
Co-Main Event
UFC Middleweight Division Fight
Brad Tavares (13-3-0) vs. Robert “The Reaper†Whittaker (13-4-0)
Tavares has only won just one of his last three bouts, with that lone win coming over Nate Marquardt at UFC 182. Whittaker enters the fight on a two fight winning streak and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes. Tavares has not earned a stoppage victory (TKO/KO/Submission) in over four years, with his last win via finish coming over Phil Baroni at UFC 125. Of Whittaker’s last four victories, three of them have come over RUF alumni, the lone non-TUF alumni he defeated was Mike Rhodes at UFC Fight Night: Te Huna vs. Marquardt. Tavares may not have the best finishing rate, but his volume filled striking always gives fighters problems and he earns another decision here.
UFC Light Heavyweight Division Fight
“The Real OC†Sean O’Connell (16-6-0) vs. Anthony “The Hippo†Perosh (15-8-0)
O’Connell has won just one of three fights under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Matt Van Buren at UFC Fight Night: McGregor vs. Siver. Perosh has rotated wins and losses in his last five UFC bouts, with his last fight being a win over Guto Inocente at UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Bisping. O’Connell is not much of a world beater in the UFC, Perosh gets the takedown and he submits O’Connell in the first.
UFC Lightweight Division Fight
Jake “The Celtic Kid†Matthews (8-0-0) vs. James “The Texecutioner†Vick (7-0-0)
Matthews has already earned three victories under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Vagner Rocha at UFC Fight Night: Rockhold vs. Bisping. Vick has also earned three wins in UFC competition, last defeating Nick Hein at UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Swanson. These are two of the better lightweight prospects in the UFC right now, but Matthews is the better skilled fighter at this point and he out strikes Vick on route to a decision.
