UFC FIGHT NIGHT 70 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 6/26/2015 4:16 PM

Despite a card that was practically destroyed by last second visa issues, UFC Fight Night 70 will still go on this weekend for MMA fans. The event will be headlined by a huge middleweight division bout as Lyoto Machida does battle against Yoel Romero. Also, Lorenz Larkin faces Santiago Ponzinibbio and TUF Champion Eddie Gordon looks for another win in the UFC.

Main Card

Main Event

UFC Middleweight Division Fight

Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (22-6-0) vs. Yoel “Soldier Of God” Romero (9-1-0)

Machida has won three of five fights since dropping to middleweight and he has challenged champion Chris Weidman for the middleweight gold at UFC 175. Romero is currently undefeated in UFC competition and this will be his first main event fight in the promotion. Machida is a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and this fight against Romero comes just two months after a losing effort to Luke Rockhold at UFC On Fox 15. Romero will be fighting for the first time since his controversial win over Tim Kennedy at UFC 178, a fight where he refused to get off his stool in between the second and third rounds. Romero is one of the more aggressive fighters in the UFC right now, Romero grounds the striking Machida to get a decision victory.

Co-Main Event

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Lorenz “The Monsoon” Larkin (15-4-0-1NC) vs. Santiago “Gente Boa” Ponzinibbio (19-2-0)

Larkin is currently undefeated as a welterweight in the UFC after a disastrous run at middleweight, where he went 1-4-0. Ponzinibbio has won two of three fights under the UFC banner, last defeating Sean Strickland at UFC Fight Night: Bigfoot vs. Mir. Larkin also spent time competing in Strikeforce, where he holds a victory over current UFC Middleweight Champion Robbie Lawler. Ponzinibbio will be competing twice in a year for the first time since 2012, where he fought a total of three times. Larkin looked quicker since dropping to welterweight, but Ponzinibbio has the range and better striking, which will carry him to a decision win.

UFC Middleweight Division Fight

Eddie “Truck” Gordon (7-3-0) vs. Antonio “Cara De Sapato” Carlos Jr. (4-1-0)

Gordon has won just one of three fights under the UFC banner and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 19. Carlos Jr. will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came to Patrick Cummins at UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Dollaway. Gordon has been a shadow of his former self in the UFC, Carlos Jr. grounds and submits Gordon in the second round.

UFC Middleweight Division Fight

Steve “The Boss” Bosse (10-1-0) vs. Thiago “Marreta” Santos (10-3-0)

Bosse will be making his UFC debut in this fight, but he has defeated UFC veterans Houston Alexander, Marvin Eastman and Wes Simms. Santos has rotated wins and losses throughout his UFC run, with his last bout being a win over Andy Enz at UFC 183. Bosse would be a much more dangerous fighter if he were not coming off of a two year layoff, Santos gets the quick TKO finish.

UFC Featherweight Division Fight

Hacran “Barnabe” Dias (22-3-1) vs. Levan “The Hornet” Makashvilli (7-1-0)

Dias has won two of four fights under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Darren Elkins at UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Dollaway. Makashvilli is currently undefeated in UFC competition, having defeated Mark Eddiva at UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Faber. Dias has a ground game good enough to cause Darren Elkins problems, so he will have no problem keeping Makashvilli on the ground to get a decision.

Preliminary Card

Alex Oliveira over Joe Merritt

Danny Martinez over Sirwan Kakai

Lewis Gonzalez over Leandro Silva

Steve Montgomery over Tony Sims
