UFC FIGHT NIGHT 79 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 11/27/2015 11:11 AM

The UFC is making their highly anticipated debut in South Korea with a card that will be airing exclusively on UFC Fight Pass. The event will be headlined by a pivotal welterweight division bout as Benson Henderson faces Jorge Masvidal. Also, Dong Hyun Kim faces Dominic Waters and Yoshiro Akiyama looks for his second straight victory.

Main Card

Main Event

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Benson “Smooth” Henderson (22-5-0) vs. Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal (29-9-0)

Henderson has been undefeated since moving up to the welterweight division, having defeated Brandon Thatch at UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Thatch. Masvidal is another fighter who is undefeated at welterweight, with his win coming over Cezar Ferreira at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale. Henderson is also a former UFC Lightweight Champion, he successfully defended the belt three times before losing it to Anthony Pettis at UFC 164. Masvidal has won six of eight since coming to the UFC in 2013, with three of those wins coming over TUF alumni. Masvidal will keep the fight interesting for awhile using his boxing, but Henderson’s constant takedowns will eventually hamper Masvidal on route to a decision win.

Co-Main Event

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Dong Hyun “Stun Gun” Kim (20-3-1-1NC) vs. Dominic “Sho Nuff” Waters (9-3-0)

Kim has won five of his last six under the UFC banner, most notably defeating John Hathaway at the UFC Ultimate Fighter China I Finale. Waters is currently winless under the UFC banner, having dropped a fight to George Sullivan at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 21 Finale. Kim has only fought one of his last seven UFC bouts in North America, with that one appearance being a win over Josh Burkman at UFC 187. Prior to coming to the UFC earlier this year, Waters did compete once in the World Series Of Fighting, defeating Martin Sano at the WSOF 16. Waters is going to be completely ineffective against Kim, as Kim with pressure him with takedowns from bell to bell as he earns a decision.

UFC Welterweight Division Fight

Yoshihiro “Sexyama” Akiyama (14-5-0-2NC) vs. Alberto “Soldier Of God” Mina (11-0-0)

Akiyama has only won just one of his last five under the UFC banner and he will be returning to action after a year-plus layoff. Mina made his UFC debut back at UFC Fight Night: Bisping vs. Le, where he defeated Shinsho Anzai by TKO. Akiyama is nowhere near the fighter he once was before coming to the UFC, Mina eventually catches him with some strikes for a first round finish.

UFC Featherweight Division Fight

Doo Ho “The Korean Superman” Choi (12-1-0) vs. Sam Sicilia (15-5-0)

Choi is currently undefeated under the UFC banner, having defeated Juan Manuel Puig by TKO at UFC Fight Night: Edgar vs. Swanson. Sicilia has won three of his last four under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Akira Corassani at UFC On Fox 14. This fight is going to be a stand up war for as long as it lasts, Sicilia eventually clips Choi to get a second round stoppage.
