UFC FIGHT NIGHT 80 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 12/7/2015 3:55 PM

History will be made in a small way this Thursday Night at UFC Fight Night 80 becomes the first North American UFC event to be entirely streamed on UFC Fight Pass. The event will be headlined by a key women’s strawweight division fight as Paige VanZant faces Rose Namajunas. Also, Jim Miller faces Michael Chiesa in a lightweight division affair and Sage Northcutt returns to the octagon.

Main Card

Main Event

UFC Women’s Strawweight Division Fight

Rose “Thug” Namajunas (3-2-0) vs. Paige “12 Gauge” VanZant (6-1-0)

Namajuanas will be looking to build on the momentum of her first UFC win, which came over Angela Hill at UFC 192. VanZant is currently undefeated under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Felice Herrig at UFC On Fox 15. Namajunas, along with Carla Esparza, were the first two women to ever compete for the UFC Women’s Strawweight Title. VanZant has only suffered one defeat thus far since turning pro, which came to fellow UFC veteran Tecia Torres at Invicta FC IV. VanZant will look good early overwhelming Namajunas with strikes, but Namajunas will get stronger when the fight hits the ground and she catches VanZant with a late submission for the upset win.

Co-Main Event

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Michael “Maverick” Chiesa (12-2-0) vs. Jim Miller (25-6-0-1NC)

Chiesa has won three of his last four under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Francsico Trinaldo at UFC 173. Miller has only won just one fight in the last year-plus, with that win coming over Danny Castillo at UFC On Fox 16. Chiesa made UFC history back in June 2012, when he won the first and thus far only live season of the UFC Ultimate Fighter. Miller has been on a downfall in recent years, only putting together one winning streak of two fights or more in the last four years. Miller will use his wrestling to keep things interesting for awhile, but Chiesa’s ground game will eventually take over as he earns the decision.

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

“Super” Sage Northcutt (6-0-0) vs. Cody “The Pfist” Pfister (12-4-1)

Northcutt made his UFC debut earlier this year at UFC 192, where he defeated Francisco Trevino by first round TKO. Pfister has won just one of two under the UFC banner, but he is a former Xtreme Fighting League Lightweight Champion. Pfister is a worthy test for the young upstart in Northcutt, but Northcutt overwhelms him with strikes to get another first round finish.

UFC Middleweight Division Fight

Thiago “Marreta” Santos (11-3-0) vs. Elias “The Spartan” Theodorou (11-0-0)

Santos will enter the fight riding a two fight winning streak, last defeating Steve Bosse at UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Romero. Theodorou has already won three bouts under the UFC banner and he was the winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter Nations. Santos’s striking will keep things interesting for awhile, but Theodorou eventually grounds and pounds him out for a second round stoppage.
