ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS 35 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 12/8/2015 4:17 PM

With a total of five big MMA events this coming weekend, one of the most overlooked of the bunch may be One Championships 35. The event will see the crowning of the promotions first heavyweight champion as UFC veteran Brandon Vera faces Paul Cheng. Also, Ana Julaton faces Irina Mazepa and many other top MMA prospects will be stepping back into the cage.

Main Event

One Championships Heavyweight Title Decision Fight

Paul “Typhoon” Cheng (5-1-0) vs. Brandon “The Truth” Vera (13-7-0-1NC)

Cheng is taking this fight on less than a weeks notice, after original opponent Chi Lewis Parry was pulled from the fight. Vera is currently undefeated under the One Championships banner, having defeated Igor Subora at One Championships 23. Cheng is also undefeated in One Championships competition, defeating both Alain Ngalani and Mahmoud Hassan. Vera spent a total of eight years competing in the UFC, earning a total of seven wins in the promotion. Cheng would have stood a better shot if he had more than four days of prep time for the fight, Vera overwhelms him with strikes to win the title.

Co-Main Event

One Championships Women’s Flyweight Division Fight

Ana “The Hurricane” Julaton (2-1-0) vs. Irina Mazepa (1-0-0)

Julaton has spent her entire professional MMA career in One Championship, but this will be her first bout in just over a year. Mazepa made her professional MMA debut earlier this year at One Championships 32, defeating Ann Osman by knockout. Julaton has had all three of her pro bouts go to the third round, with two of those three going to a decision. Mazepa’s victory over Osman was a controversial one, because the referee missed her cage grabbing during a takedown attempt by her opponent, which would lead to the knockout a short time later. This fight should see both competitors establish their striking, but it will be Julaton barely getting the decision in a close one.

One Championships Bantamweight Division Fight

Jordan “Showtime” Lucas (8-0-0) vs. Mark “Mugen” Striegl (14-1-0)

Lucas will be making his One Championships debut in this fight, but he is coming off of a three fight run in the Brace For War MMA promotion. Striegl is currently undefeated in One Championships, having defeated Casey Suire by submission at One Championships 26. Lucas earned his undefeated record with some stellar victories, but Striegl is amazing on the ground and he submits Lucas in the second.

One Championships Flyweight Division Fight

Ruel “The Wushu” Catalan (2-6-0) vs. Alex “Little Rock” Silva (2-1-0)

Catalan will enter the fight on a two fight losing streak and he has not earned a victory in just over two years. Silva has won just one of two under the One Championships banner, with that lone win coming over Rene Catalan at One Championships VIII. Silva will be returning to action after a two year absence, but Catalan is not much to speak of in the cage, Silva submits him in the first.

One Championships Women’s Strawweight Division Fight

“Unstoppable” Angela Lee (3-0-0) vs. Lena Tkhorevska (3-1-0)

Lee has spent her entire professional MMA career until this point in One Championships and this will be her fourth fight of the year. Tkhorevska will be making her One Championships debut in this fight and all her her wins have come by first round stoppage. This is a classic striking versus grappling encounter here, but it will be Lee capping off a great 2015 by using her strikes to get another first round win.

One Championships Featherweight Division Fight

Christian Lee (0-0-0) vs. David Meak (1-4-0)

Lee will be making his professional MMA debut in this fight and the competitor has no amateur experience to speak of. Meak will be making his One Championships debut in this encounter, having previously fought in the Fightworld Cup promotion. Meak may have far better experience as a pro when compared to Lee, but Meak is being brought in to lose and that is exactly what will happen.

One Championships Flyweight Division Fight

Jianbing Yang (5-1-0-1NC) vs. Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio (6-4-0)

Yang will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came to Ze Wu at One Championships 28. Eustaquio will enter the fight on a two fight losing streak and he is currently on his second run in the promotion. The amjority of this bout should be contested on the ground, which is where Yang will dominate to earn a decision.

One Championships Flyweight Division Fight

Eugene Toquero (7-2-0) vs. Ze Wu (3-2-0)

Toquero has won two of four under the One Championships banner, but his last bout was a loss to Asuka Mikami at One Championships 32. Wu will be returning to One Championships after a six month absence, having won two of three fights in the promotion. Toquero is one of the better strikers in the promotion, Toquero catches Wu early on route to a TKO finish.

One Championships Featherweight Division Fight

Anthony “The Archangel” Engelen (3-0-0) vs. Bruno Pucci (3-1-0)

Engelen will be making his One Championships debut in this fight and only one of his bouts as a pro went to the judge’s scorecards. Pucci will be looking to rebound from his first professional MMA defeat, which came to Major Overall at One Championships 16. Engelen has not fought much top level competition since turning pro and Pucci has, Pucci submits Engelen in the first.
