UFC ON FOX 17 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 12/18/2015 12:13 PM

The final UFC event of 2015 is finally upon us and the worlds biggest MMA promotion is closing out the year with a bang. The event will be headlined by a UFC Lightweight Title bout as champion Rafael Dos Anjos defends against Donald Cerrone. Also, Junior Dos Santos faces Alistair Overeem and Nate Diaz returns to the octagon to battle Michael Johnson.

Main Card

Main Event

UFC Lightweight Title Fight

Rafael Dos Anjos (24-7-0) (Champion) vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (28-6-0-1NC)

Dos Anjos will be making the first defense of his championship, which he won by defeating Anthony Pettis at UFC 185. Cerrone will enter the fight riding an eight fight winning streak, with five of those eight fights not going to the judge’s scorecards. Dos Anjos won the initial meeting between the two, which came via unanimous decision at UFC Fight Night: Condit vs. Kampmann II. Cerrone will be challenging for a title for the first time in five years, as he previously challenged Ben Henderson for the WEC Lightweight Title in 2009 and 2010. Dos Anjos is going to want to do the same thing he did to Anthony Pettis at UFC 195 and ground Cerrone, but Cerrone counters with his superior striking and submission game to get a close split decision.

Co-Main Event

UFC Heavyweight Division Fight

Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos (17-3-0) vs. “The Demolition Man” Alistair Overeem (39-14-0-1NC)

Dos Santos has rotated wins and losses in his last five UFC appearances, with his last bout being a win over Stipe Miocic at UFC On Fox 13. Overeem has won three of his last four under the UFC banner, most notably defeating Roy Nelson at UFC 185. Dos Santos will be returning to action after a year-plus layoff, which is the longest layoff of his UFC tenure. Overeem has won four fights thus far in the UFC, with two of those wins coming over former UFC Heavyweight Champions in Frank Mir and Brock Lesnar. Dos Santos has an incredible ability to endure a lot of pain in his fights, but his chin is getting weaker by the round and Overeem will finish him with strikes in the second.

UFC Lightweight Division Fight

Nate Diaz (17-10-0) vs. Michael “The Menace” Johnson (16-9-0)

Diaz has only won just one of his last four under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Gray Maynard at the UFC Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. Johnson will be looking to rebound from his first defeat in over two years, which came to Beneil Dariush at UFC Fight Night: Teixieira vs. St. Preux. Diaz is no longer the threat he once was a few years back, Johnson keeps him at range with his strikes to get the decision.

UFC Women’s Strawweight Division Fight

Karolina Kowalkiewicz (7-0-0) vs. Randa “Quiet Storm” Markos (5-2-0)

Kowalkiewicz will be making her UFC debut in this fight and she is a longtime veteran of the KSW MMA promotion out of Poland. Markos will be looking to build on the momentum of her first UFC win, which came over Aisling Daly at UFC 186. Kowalkiewicz and Markos are both excellent with the ground games, but it will be the striking of Kowalkiewicz that gets her the decision.
