BELLATOR 149 PREVIEW & PREDICTIONS

By David Tees on 2/15/2016 8:41 PM

The potentially biggest weekend of MMA events comes to us this weekend with a total of seven big MMA events coming to us this weekend. The second of those events will be Bellator 149, which features a rematch nearly two decades in the making as Royce Gracie faces Ken Shamrock. Also, Kimbo Slice faces Dada 5000 and Melvin Guillard looks for his first win under the Bellator MMA banner.

Main Card

Main Event

Bellator MMA Openweight Division Fight

Royce Gracie (14-2-3) vs. “The Worlds Most Dangerous Man” Ken Shamrock (28-16-2)

Gracie defeated Shamrock in their first encounter that happened at UFC I and they fought to a draw in their second encounter at UFC V. Shamrock has only won just two of his last ten fights and he has not earned a victory in just over five years. Gracie will be returning to action after being away for nearly nine years, last defeating Kazushi Sakuraba at K-1 Hero! Dynamite USA in June 2007. Shamrock is currently winless under the Bellator MMA banner, losing to Kimbo Slice at Bellator 138. Shamrock has stayed more active, but he is nowhere even close to the fighter he once was, Gracie eventually gets him down and holds him down on route to a decision.

Co-Main Event

Bellator MMA Heavyweight Division Fight

Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson (5-2-0) vs. Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris (2-0-0)

Slice is currently undefeated under the Bellator MMA banner, having defeated Ken Shamrock by TKO at Bellator 138. Harris will be returning to MMA competition for the first time in five years, last competing at Mixed Fighting Alliance in February 2011. Slice did have a two fight run in the UFC a few years back, defeating Houston Alexander and suffering a defeat to Matt Mitrione. Harris may be undefeated as a professional MMA fighter, but his two total opponents had a career record of 1-16-0. This fight will be nothing short of a street fight in a cage, but Slice has the range and power over Harris, Slice finishes Harris quickly with strikes.

Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight Division Fight

Emanuel “The Hardcore Kid” Newton (25-9-1) vs. Linton “The Swarm” Vassell (15-5-0-1NC)

Newton won the first meeting between the two at Bellator 130 and he is a former Bellator MMA Light Heavyweight Champion. Vassell has only won just one of his last three in Bellator MMA, with that lone win coming over Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at Bellator 134. Vassell nearly submitted Newton many times in their first encounter, but he gets it done this time to even the score with Newton.

Bellator MMA Lightweight Division Fight

Derek “The Stallion” Campos (15-6-0) vs. Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard (32-15-2-2NC)

Campos has won just one of his last four under the Bellator MMA banner, with that lone win coming over UFC veteran Estevan Payan at Bellator 126. Guillard is a UFC veteran who is currently winless in Bellator MMA, dropping a bout to Brandon Girtz at Bellator 141. Campos has been susceptible to strikers in Bellator MMA and Guillard is a great striker, Guillard knocks Campos out early in the first.

Bellator MMA Featherweight Division Fight

Daniel “The Pit” Pineda (21-11-0) vs. Emmanuel “El Matador” Sanchez (12-2-0)

Pineda is a UFC veteran who will be making his Bellator MMA debut in this fight and he does so on a three fight winning streak. Sanchez has won four of five under the Bellator MMA banner, most notably defeating UFC veteran Justin Lawrence at Bellator 145. This fight has a great chance to be the show stealing bout, but it will be Sanchez out striking Pineda on route to a close decision win.
