PHIL HAWES APOLOGIZES FOR MAKING COVID-19 REMARKS AT UFC FIGHT NIGHT 185

By David Tees on 2/21/2021 9:16 AM

Phil Hawes competed on the main card of UFC Fight Night 185, scoring a majority decision win over Nassourdine Imavov.

During his post-fight interview with former UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping, Hawes said that he hopes either Chris Weidman or Uriah Hall would get COVID-19 so he can replace them in their upcoming bout at UFC 261.

“I know Weidman and Uriah – what’s his name? – Hall, they’re having that thing,” Hawes said (via MMA Junkie). “So hopefully, maybe someone gets COVID or something. Slide me up in there, whenever that is.”

It didn’t take long for Hawes to apologize for his comments, as the fighter said the following during a post-fight media scrum.

“I apologize. I didn’t mean for it to come out like that,” Hawes said. “I was just saying how everything’s crazy in the world, if something were to happen, I would slide in. I would never wish COVID or any illness on any person in the world. I apologize. I got my foot in the mouth for that, and I apologize. I won’t ever say that again.”
