LEON EDWARDS: “I BELIEVE A TITLE SHOT SHOULD BE NEXT”

By David Tees on 3/15/2021 1:46 PM

Leon Edwards returned to action for the first time after a year-plus absence at UFC Fight Night 187, fighting Belal Muhammad to a no contest after an accidental eye poke from Edwards to Muhammad.

The fighter doesn’t seem interested in a rematch with Muhammad, but would rather face UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman next.

“I believe a title shot should be next,” Edwards said at the UFC Fight Night 187 post-fight press conference (via MMA Junkie). “I’ve rebuilt myself back up since last competing against (Kamaru) Usman. I was on an eight-fight winning streak. Tonight was going to be nine. The writing was on the wall. I was winning the fight, clearly. I believe I should be next at the title shot. I’ve built myself back up. That’s what should be next, I think.”

Edwards is the highest ranked fighter to not have challenged Usman for the gold, but Usman did defeat Edwards by split decision in their first meeting at UFC On Fox 17 in December of 2015.

Usman may be facing Jorge Masvidal next and Edwards may not want to wait for that bout to happen before fighting again.

“I’m probably not going to wait that long,” Edwards said. “If they fight in September, I won’t fight until the end of the year (or) next year. I like to be active. I’m 29 years old. It’s been a long time off. I’ll speak to the UFC Monday, Tuesday and see what’s next.”
