REPORT: KELVIN GASTELUM STEPS IN, FACES ROBERTS WHITTAKER IN MAIN EVENT OF APRIL 10 UFC CARD

By David Tees on 3/16/2021 4:02 PM

Robert Whittaker needed a new opponent for the April 10 UFC card after the withdrawal of Paulo Costa and now he has one because Brett Okamoto of ESPN is reporting that Kelvin Gastelum has accepted the short notice opportunity.

Whittaker (22-5-0) enters the contest riding a two fight winning streak, picking up wins over the duo of Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. Whittaker is a former UFC Middleweight Champion, defeating Yoel Romero to win the gold at UFC 213 in July of 2017. Whittaker has seen his last four fights go the distance and it has been almost three years since the fighter got a finish.

Gastelum (16-6-0) has won just one of his last four under the UFC banner, with that lone win coming over Ian Heinisch at UFC 258. Gastelum was the middleweight winner of the UFC Ultimate Fighter 17, defeating Uriah Hall in the finals of the reality show. Gastelum has previously headlined four UFC cards, earning a 1-2-0-1NC record in those encounters.

UFC Fight Night: Whittaker vs. Gastelum takes place on Saturday, April 10 from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada with Robert Whittaker and Kelvin Gastelum headlining. PWInsiderXtra is providing live coverage of the event, while broadcast plans have yet to be revealed.
