Ryan Spann and Nikita Krylov will headline this weekend's UFC Fight Night 220 card from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada.
One half of this weekend’s main event in Spann says the fight against Krylov nearly didn’t happen due to the fact that he was in line for a potential light heavyweight title fight.
“This fight almost didn’t happen, but I still feel good about it,” Spann told reporters at the UFC Fight Night 220 media day (transcript via Matthew Wells & ken Hathaway of MMA Junkie). “… We was on call for the situation with the belt.”
Jamahal Hill and Glover Teixeira wound up fighting for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Title this past January, with Hill taking the gold home.
Spann says he was in line to fight others like Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev before the Krylov bout came together.
“I was going to fight, I want to say, Jan at first,” Spann said. “Then from there I was going to fight for the No. 1 guaranteed, and then fight the winner for, at the time, was an interim belt. So, Magomed and Glover were going to fight for the interim, and then I was going to fight for No. 1, because they already knew that homie was going to be out for a while.”
