UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards has fought some of the best that the sport has to offer, with the one possible exception being retired former BMF Champion Jorge Masvidal.
If there is one thing that Edwards readily admits, it is that the potential fight with Masvidal is “the one that got away.”
“That’s the one that got away,” Edwards said to MMA Fighting. “That’s the one I wished happened, the one that fans wished happened, everyone wished that fight happened. For some reason, the UFC didn’t want to make it or tried making it and Masvidal turned it down. That’s the fight that definitely got away for sure.”
There was a time when many in the MMA world thought putting that fight together was a no brainer after their backstage altercation several years ago after a UFC event in England.
Edwards believes that if the fight with Masvidal did take place, it would end with Masvidal on the receiving end of a beating.
“I wanted to put a beating on him,” Edwards said. “Looking like that or whatever he looked like, even after Askren, I just wanted to put a whooping on him and that was it. Whether it was the best Jorge or not, technically he’s just not as good as me. He’s not better than me. I just wanted to put a beating on him, but sadly I won’t get the chance in the octagon.”
