Former UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira was scheduled to fight UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev for a second time in the main event of UFC 294, but Oliveira suffered a nasty cut during training and was pulled from the bout.
UFC President Dana White wants to see how Oliveira’s cut heals before committing to giving him an opportunity against Makhachev.
“That’s all going to be determined by his cut,” White told MMA Junkie. “It was a pretty nasty cut. It was pretty deep. The thing that’s really good about it is he went to a plastic surgeon, so they sewed it up from the inside out, and hopefully that’s going to help it heal faster and heal properly.”
Makhachev wound up defending the gold against UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski, defeating him by first round knockout.
