The vacant UFC Women’s Bantamweight Title will finally be getting a new owner at UFC 297 because AG Fight is reporting that #2 Raquel Pennington and #3 Mayra Bueno Silva will meet for the gold.
Pennington (15-8-0) enters the contest riding a five fight winning streak, defeating Macy Chiasson, Marion Reneau, Pannie Kianzad, Aspen Ladd and Ketlen Vieira. Pennington previously challenged for the women’s bantamweight title at UFC 224, suffering a fifth round TKO loss to then champion Amanda Nunes. Pennington hasn’t been defeated in almost four years, with her last loss coming to former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm at UFC 246 in January of 2020.
Silva (10-2-1-1NC) has won three of her last six in the UFC, with those wins coming over Yanan Wu, Stephanie Eggar and Lina Lansberg. Silva did have a victory over the aforementioned Holm at UFC On ESPN 49 earlier this year, but the result was overturned to a no contest due to a failed drug test. Silva has earned 10 wins as a professional MMA fighter and seven of those have come by way of submission.
UFC 297 is scheduled for Saturday, January 20 from the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada with no main event announced at this time. PWInsiderXtra is providing live coverage of the event, which streams live on ESPN+ pay-per-view.
