Former UFC Middleweight Champion Alex Pereira faces former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jiri Prochazka for the vacant UFC Light Heavyweight Title tonight in the main event of UFC 295.
Many thought that Pereira would return to the middleweight division one day, but the former champion doesn’t expect that to happen anymore.
“No, I don’t think so,” Pereira said through an interpreter at Wednesday’s UFC 295 media day (transcript via Danny Segura & Ken Hathaway of MMA Junkie). “Like I’ve mentioned before, I did have plans for middleweight, but I feel great in this weight class, and I’ve fought a lot at middleweight. It’s taken a toll on my body. So for me, it’s much better to stay in this weight class.”
Pereira has gone 1-0-0 since moving up to light heavyweight in the UFC, with that victory coming over former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz.
