Controversy has reared its ugly head in Bellator as Bellator Lightweight Champion Usman Nurmagomedov has failed a drug test and has been suspended six months by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), Ariel Helwani was the first to report the news.
Nurmagomedov, who defeated Brent Primus at Bellator 300 to advance to the finals of the lightweight world grand prix, has had his win over Primus overturned to a no contest and may also be stripped of the title. Nurmagomedov will be affected financially as well because the CSAC has fined the fighter $50,000 as well.
MMA Junkie has obtained the official document on the matter, which you can view by clicking here.
The fighter apparently popped for a medication provided by a physician, but didn’t report said medication to the CSAC for a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) before drug testing began.
“Usman was prescribed medication for an illness he had,” Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz said in a statement sent to MMA Fighting. “It’s not an anabolic steroid, EPO, HGH, etc. Nothing enhancing. He will rematch Primus and get back in the tournament.”
Primus, who was initially defeated by Nurmagomedov at Bellator 300, issued the following to MMA Fighting on the failed drug test:
“I just can’t believe a young undefeated fighter, coming from the camp he’s coming from would cheat and use a banned substance.”
Bellator Executive Mike Kogan issued a statement on the matter as well, which can be viewed by clicking here.
Nurmagomedov would also take to Instagram to comment on the matter:
There is no word yet on how Bellator will move forward in both the lightweight grand prix and with the lightweight title.
