Former multi-time UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Carla Esparza gave birth to her son in September of 2023 and also hasn’t competed in the Octagon since losing the strawweight title to Weli Zhang at UFC 281 in November of 2022.

Rumors started recently stating that Esparza has retired from professional MMA competition after UFC Roster Watch claimed that Esparza had been removed from the UFC roster.

However, it appears that Esparza is prepping for a return to action, based on what she recently posted on Instagram:

A post shared by Carla (@carlaesparza1)

“I keep receiving messages so I wanted to clear it up. Maybe I was removed for inactivity. I am slowly biding my time and building my body and pelvic floor back up according to my PT’s recommendation. During the postpartum period there is relaxin and progesterone in the joints and their surrounding structures (especially since I am exclusively breastfeeding) which causes a slackening of the ligaments and can greatly increase the chance of injury during training. Just trying to have an intelligent approach to my comeback and do everything in my power to avoid an injury setback.”

There is no word at this time as to when Esparza will compete again or who that opponent will be.
