ISLAM MAKHACHEV EXPLAINSWHY HE ISN’T FIGHTING LEON EDWARDS AT UFC 300

There were rumors leading into UFC 300 that UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev could be fighting UFC Welterweight Champion Leon Edwards at the event.

Makhachev says that he would’ve loved to compete in the champion versus champion fight, but couldn’t train properly for the encounter because he is observing Ramadan.

“Honestly, yes, but it’s not possible, man,” Makhachev told MMA Junkie. “Because we have Ramadan now. One month with fasting, and it’s not possible to do training in Ramadan. It’s very hard. You have to fast when the sun rises, and all day you have to fast. … Training this time is very hard.”

Neither Makhachev or Edwards are booked for a fight at the moment, so there is still a possibility that the super fight can come together.

The lightweight champion admits that missing the opportunity to fight Edwards makes him sad.

“Of course (it makes me sad), this is a dream fight for me,” Makhachev said. “I don’t have any small chance to fight at UFC 300, that’s why I’m very upset, man. It’s a big deal, big fight with Leon Edwards for the second belt, but this time I miss the chance.”
