UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev will be defending the gold against former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302.
A former opponent of Poirier’s and a longtime friend/training partner of Makhachev in former UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov will be cornering Makhachev this weekend.
The news was announced on Instagram:
Nurmagomedov fought Poirier back at UFC 242 in September of 2019, defeating Poirier via third round submission to become the undisputed UFC Lightweight Champion.
UFC 302 takes place on Saturday, June 1 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey with Islam Makhachev and Dustin Poirier headlining. PWInsiderXtra is providing live coverage of the event, which streams live on ESPN+ pay-per-view.
