UFC Fight Night: Jandiroba vs. Lemos Recap
Although this show didn’t receive much fanfare, which is relatively understandable, it ended up having some fun fights and great finishes. The Main Card really flew by for me, especially since I didn’t watch it live and was able to fast forward through all the commercials and video packages. I was sad to see the co-main event get dropped, but the rest of the card pretty much delivered for a show that I had low expectations for. I didn’t expect it to suck, but I wasn’t overly excited about it. Either way, let’s take a look at the results for what turned out to be a fun card…
Main Card
Virna Jandiroba def. Amanda Lemos via sub (armbar) (R2, 4:48)
Steve Garcia def. Seung Woo Choi via first-round TKO (1:36)
Kurt Holobaugh def. Kaynan Kruschewsky via unanimous decision (29-28 x3)
Bruno Silva def. Cody Durden via second-round TKO (2:58)
Doo Ho Choi def. Bill Algeo via second-round TKO (3:38)
Hyder Amil def. Jeong Yeong Lee via first-round TKO (1:05)
Preliminary Card
Cody Gibson def. Brian Kelleher via sub (arm triangle) (R1, 3:58)
Miranda Maverick def. Dione Barbosa via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x2)
Trey Ogden def. Loik Radzhabov via unanimous decision (29-28 x2, 30-27)
Luana Carolina def. Lucie Pudilova via unanimous decision (29-28 x2, 30-27)
Thomas Petersen def. Mohammed Usman via unanimous decision (30-27 x3)
The Prelims
The Prelims were the complete opposite of the Main Card. The Prelims had all decisions, except for one fight. The Main Card had all finishes, except for one fight. However, both parts of the show were fun to watch for those different reasons. Here’s what stood out to me about the Prelims…
Mohammed Usman has a lot to learn. Simple as that.
I didn’t learn this on the Prelims, but from his post-fight press conference - I remembered just how confident Trey Ogden is. I don’t know if I like it or not. I would like to see him take on a much tougher fighter before he talks the way he does. He just might get that with his wanting Chase Hooper.
Miranda Maverick continues to have fun fights. I’d like to see her get a nice finish soon, though, to solidify the improvements that she has been working on.
Cody Gibson really impressed me with his finish of Brian Kelleher. Kelleher is a tough dude and Gibson just outworked him on the ground. Nicely done!
Jeong Yeong Lee vs. Hyder Amil
This got bumped to the Main Card once the co-main event got dropped. It was a hell of a way to start off the featured fights. Hyder Amil just threw punches and never stopped. Jeong Yeong Lee did his best to throw in some shots, but Amil was relentless. I thought he was going to punch himself tired, but ended up getting the finish early.
Doo Ho Choi vs. Bill Algeo
This was a hell of a scrap. Bill Algeo had things working until Doo Ho Choi got a hold of his neck. I was quite surprised that Algeo lost his momentum in this because he looked good at the start. But hey - this is why you fight the fight. This is why you don’t give up. Doo Ho Choi really impressed me with his ability to work through what Algeo was throwing at him.
Cody Durden vs. Bruno Silva
This was another fun scrap until it ended. I ended up impressed again on this card - this time with Bruno Silva. Cody Durden is not easy to finish and Silva was able to do just that. He ended up laying in a vicious strike that just stopped Durden completely.
Kurt Holobaugh vs. Kaynan Kruschewsky
I felt bad in my preview when I didn’t pick either person from The Ultimate Fighter Season 31 to win on this card. They both made me look bad as they both won. This was a close fight, though. Kruschewsky had some moments and did a nice job of getting Kurt Holobaugh in compromising positions. However, he just didn’t do enough with those positions, allowing Kurt to get the win.
Steve Garcia vs. Seung Woo Choi
I expected this to be a quick one and it was. Man, Steve Garcia throws vicious strikes for his weight class. I’d love to see him be more active this and next year. He could be a threat if he keeps it up.
Amanda Lemos vs. Virna Jandiroba
With an impressive win, someone was going to be considered a title contender. Well, that happened and the person ended up being Virna Jandiroba. She is looking so impressive lately. She’s super long and is able to keep her opponents at a distance. Lemos has really long arms, too, but Jandiroba did a great job handling that. It was what she did on the ground, though, that was next level. It was a grappling master class - patience and position. I loved watching it and I just know it’s going to be tough to stop her at the top of the division. I’m not sure if she’s definitely going to get a title shot next, but she’s certainly close.
My Picks
I ended up not doing too bad, going 7-4 with my picks. I should have trusted my gut on The Ultimate Fighters guys, but I messed up on that. I feel like I need to start making my $1 bets again soon on some fights. I just haven’t been consistent enough lately. We’ll see!
Overall, I ended up enjoying this show more than I expected. Of course, my expectations were a bit low, so it didn’t need to do a whole lot to exceed my level of excitement. It was solid, though.
Speaking of excitement, though, how excited are you for UFC 304? I can’t wait! Let me know what you’re looking forward to at matt.tenhoeve@gmail.com. I’ll be back in a few days to take a look at that card, along with The Ultimate Fighter episode that is on tomorrow. See you then!
