Former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier will fight former UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 318.
This bout will serve as Poirier’s final professional MMA fight and UFC CEO Dana White says that the whole event was built in support of Poirier’s retirement.
“Throughout the world, Dustin Poirier is a big star for us,” White told WDSU in Louisiana (transcript via Damon Martin of MMA Fighting). “He’s accomplished a lot in the sport. This is for him, to be honest with you. This is for him. He wanted to have his last fight and end his career in New Orleans so here we are.”
Poirier and Holloway have met twice before under the UFC banner, with Poirier walking away victorious on both of those occasions.
White believe the third bout between Poirier and Holloway is going to be a great one in the end.
“Poirier is fighting Max Holloway — another one of the all-time greats,” White said. “It should be an amazing fight.”
