There has been a changing of the guard in the UFC Heavyweight Division as Jon Jones has retired and is no longer the UFC Heavyweight Champion. Tom Aspinall, who was the UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion, is now the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion.
UFC CEO Dana White made the announcement during the UFC Baku post-fight press conference.
"Jon Jones called us last night and retired. Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC," White said (transcript via Matt Erickson & Danny Segura of MMA Junkie).
Jones wound up defending the title just once after defeating Ciryl Gane to win in, with that lone defense coming over Stipe Miocic in November of 2024.
White says that the UFC will be making sure Aspinall is taken care of after making his wait so long for a fight that never materialized.
"I obviously feel bad for Tom that he lost all that time and money, but we'll make it up to him," White said. "Tom Aspinall is a good guy. He's been incredible through this whole process that we've gone through. He's been willing to do anything – fight him anywhere at any time and do this. Now he's like, 'I'll fight anybody. Tell me who and I'll fight him.' Aspinall has been great. He's going to be a great heavyweight champion for us and I'm excited to work with him."
Aspinall would take to Insatgram to react to the news:
“For you fans. It’s time to get this heavyweight division going. An active undisputed champion.”
There is no word yet on when the new UFC Heavyweight Champion will make his first title defense.
