Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey and MMA legend Gina Carano will meet this May in the first MMA event to be broadcast on Netflix.
UFC CEO is happy that both Rousey and Carano are getting the opportunity that they both wanted.
“Her and I have been talking about this since last year,” White said at the UFC Houston post-fight press conference (transcript via Damon Martin of MMA Fighting). “It just didn’t work out. But I’m happy for her. Listen, me and Gina are in a really good place, we weren’t at one point. I’m happy for both of them.”
Rousey is returning to action after being away from MMA competition for almost a decade, while it has been even longer since Carano last competed.
The former women’s bantamweight champion also said that her upcoming fight had been pitched to the UFC, but the money differences is what lead to the bout being on Netflix.
“It no longer made sense for me to go over there because they didn’t want to pay us the money we deserve,” Rousey said. “Because then from the rest of the time the deal, they’re going to have to pay everybody else more. So then I decided to look elsewhere.”
