LOOKING AT THE CREDIBILITY OF THE WWE AND TNA CHAMPIONSHIPS

By Stu Laverty on 11/27/2006 10:51 AM

Recently, I have developed a strong distaste for many titles and their reputation. Not just WWE, but TNA also. For example, the Intercontinental Title has changed three times in about a month and has been defended four times. Three title changed out of four matches is seriously bad going for that title. It just kills the credibility of the title reigns. The X-Division title is just as bad, three changes in three weeks (or four weeks), is just ludicrous.

Then you have the main titles. The only main title in WWE and TNA with its credibility in tact is the World Heavyweight Championship.

WWE Title: Cena - and this isn't mindless bashing its the god honest truth. To be fair to the guy, he's the biggest money bringer WWE has and is a perfect superstar in that respect. But what I fail to see is why they hold him back. For a guy that has single handedly defeated a lot of the RAW locker room (Jericho, Angle, HHH, Edge), it takes away from those superstars to be defeated by a man who used a limited moveset at that time. What credibility does it show for the WWE title to have Cena use only five moves
and be given the title? Also - to have the WWE Champion feud with K-Fed is pathetic and if he's still champion at that match the credibility of the title will go down once more. Another fact is, he's had no challenger since Unforgiven. Not even a feud (unless you consider K-Fed a feud). WWE are teasing an Umaga feud, which I'm very sceptical about.

The NWA World Heavyweight Title - so Sting wins. Good for him. Not my choice but I understand why they did it. But Sting isn't a money bringer and he's about fifty years old. Quite bad for business. Then a month later they hand it to Abyss in a heel/dirty way. Good, or bad? Bad. Abyss is not a money bringer and people take one look and call him a Mankind rip-off (when in reality he isn't). Next month is Turning Point and we have Abyss vs Cage vs Sting - and I have no doubt that the title will change one way (probably to
Cage). If this happens as I expect it to, then three title changes in three months for the biggest title would just suck. I'm already wondering if I should just stop watching TNA now.

The ECW World Title - no good matches for it in ages. Big Show never defends it, because he's injured. All his opponents have been RVD and Sabu - both disciplined for drugs and one will be lucky if he lasts until the end of the year in WWE. No good matches for it ever, and the credibility of the champion was taken away when he lost to RVD three weeks in a row recently. Not good. As the only title in ECW, they (WWE), should be doing their utmost to make it credible - not make it some joke.

Then we get to the World Heavyweight Title. If Batista wins at Survivor Series, everything I say here will become void, so bear with me. Booker is a great champion - best champion in years. Winning the champion of champions match has done wonders for his gimmick and for something which everyone was expecting to be a simple transitional champion from Rey to Batista, he's done expertly. The great job on the WHC has led to the recent revival of
Smackdown.

Then we have the other titles. The Women's title which after Survivor Series might as well just be destroyed until Beth Phoenix comes back. The Cruiserweight title which has not been defended in months (I wish Matt Hardy would just lose weight so he can compete for it again) - even though the cruiserweight division has the potential right now to be awesome (what with Helms, Hardy, Yang, Noble all there). The Tag Titles which are good on one
brand (Smackdown) and have only just become slightly good on the other (RAW). Giving the legends the title killed Spirit Squad's credibility for a few weeks and Rated RKO have no real contenders besides...D-X. And we're just not going there, hopefully. The US Title is fine right now, however.
