Location: Irish Centre, Digbeth, Birmingham, West Midlands.
After being asked by a few individuals to come to their training sessions and write a report for them, I decided to check out the training school of Anti Watershed Wrestling and below is a thorough look into Anti Watershed Wrestling’s training school based at the Irish Centre, in Digbeth, Birmingham. The training took place in the upstairs of AWW’s home base (for shows) the Irish Centre, Digbeth. There were a number of mats placed in the middle of the floor, the trainees (including AWW Wrestler Ronin, LPW wrestler Aphrodite and AWW Referee Potter) entered at different intervals before 7pm, Dangerous Danny D (One half of the AWW Promoters) was there overseeing the session while AWW Champion Carnage was the guest trainer on this occasion. The session was broken down into three parts, warm ups, work and fun.
Warm Ups
- Squat Thrusts
- Star Jumps
- Press-ups
- Front and Back Neck Rolls
- Sit-ups
- Jog around floor
10 of the above each
- Stretches
After the warm ups, the work began……..
Work
Front Bumps - (Jumping and landing on your back), with a few trainees not quite doing it correctly. Carnage explained to them that they needed to do until it was perfect. Even doing the bump himself to show the trainees just exactly how it was done. There was a calm atmosphere, with people having a laugh and a joke and then being serious when they needed to be.
Front splashes - (Landing flat on your face)
Hip tosses (Two people involved in this one would stand and flip the over person over).
Clothesline
Lock up’s and transitions into other moves (Headlocks, Writslocks, etc) was then taught.
Crucifix into a Pin was the next hold that was taught, a lot of hilarious moments (Ronin attempting to do the manoeuvre) taken in good spirit during this part of the session. When mistakes were made once again Carnage would say to them, this is what you did wrong and he would then show them just how to do it right.
Crucifix into a sunset flip (Same as above just this time instead of the arms, you transition from the arms to the legs for the pin)
Splash (Carnage laid on the mat as each trainee splashed him)
Different Submissions were then taught, Arm bars and Camel Clutch were the moves of choice.
Different variations of the pin fall were then shown to the trainees.
Powerslams were next to be taught once again even though mistakes were made, Carnage explained to the trainees where they went wrong and had them do it over until it was perfect.
Suplexes
How to reverse a wheelbarrow into a bulldog (A move made famous by former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Rey Mysterio) was the next technique that was shown.
Headscissors was the last and most difficult manoeuvre to be shown during the session.
Fun
The trainees were then allowed to have some time to themselves as the training session came to an end. Some trainees used this as a time to practice while others chatted between themselves. AWW Promoters Dangerous Danny D and Stu Smith then had a quick conference with the trainees.
Overall Thoughts:
I decided to make the short trip to AWW’s Digbeth training centre, because I wanted to gain some experience writing training session based reports. I had a thoroughly enjoyable time, I like Carnage’s training style, having a laugh and a joke with the trainee’s but being serious when the time came. It isn’t a style that is normally used in Professional Wrestling as you constantly hear about how the trainer is a ‘hard ass’ etc. I think it was effective as the trainees weren’t scared, they could feel at home training with Anti Watershed Wrestling.
