TAG TEAM WEEKLY

By Joel Croyle on 10/3/2007 11:31 AM

September 27th – October 3rd, 2007

Introduction:

Regularly I make this article only about the tag teams but I think I have really covered all the tag issues going on in WWE and TNA down below.  So, for once, I want to speak on just a few other things.  One, I want to thank everybody for reading my articles and I plan to write a whole bunch more so LOOKOUT!  I noticed that in my recent rendition of PPV by The Numbers (about Unforgiven) I sparked a lively conversation on Gamespot.com.  I really appreciate it when I can get people to discuss my work or my thoughts.  As a journalist that is the only thing anyone can ask for.

The other thing I’d like to say involves a singles WWE star.  Arguably, the biggest WWE star today, one Mr. John Cena.  According to what I just read on www.pwinsider.com he is going to be out for a while.  I want to say two things; one goes to John himself…John Cena, Thank you for giving your all my man, every time you were in that ring it was 125%.  Not many people can do that in any walk of life, let alone wrestling.

That said, I know a lot of you don’t like, or enjoy Cena. Honestly, even if he hadn’t gotten hurt, the guy needed to be off television for a while, his formulaic Hulk Hogan meets the Rock act was stale and that is no discredit to Cena, but to WWE’s writers.  When WWE has as many issues as they did last year, and they have to (in their minds) keep going back to the well every PPV and unload pain on Cena, a nasty injury is bound to occur.  It is unfortunate and maybe could have been avoided.

I hope that WWE makes a good decision about No Mercy because the Cena/Orton match was the reason to buy the PPV.  If it were me, and I know its not, I would do one of two things.  Either move HHH into the title picture against Orton (Maybe announce it on Smackdown to up PPV buy rates) or say that a mystery opponent awaits Orton at the PPV to decide the world champion.  With all that is going on, fans would assume it was Jericho , and therefore tune in.  And WWE should give us that pay off…in the end either way I still would put the belt on Orton and have Jericho or HHH hunting him till Survivor Series or even The Royal Rumble.  Look for my No Mercy by the numbers article this weekend sometime for more on that!

Okay, enough of my singles rant…to the tag division.

RAW

Cade and Murdoch

They had a more than solid 6-man match and are primed for their titles to be taken.  I wonder if maybe we are going to see an impromptu 3-way dance on Sunday. Thumbs up.

Kendrick and London

Okay, so officially, these guys are on par with “AJ Styles’” incredibility. No one, and I mean no one, got a bigger pop last night than when London did that running 360 move off the apron on the entire card.  They should be the next tag team champs.  Thumbs way up!

The Highlanders

Their skit was done well in a bushwhacker meets demolition meets Afa and Sika sort of way.  Regal not really making any decision towards them as #1 contender here was the best way to go.  They could be well on their way up the ladder of success.  Thumbs in the middle since they didn’t wrestle but are showing progress.

Shelton Benjamin and Jeff Hardy

I know, I know…they aren’t a tag team, but each of them officially or unofficially has a tag team partner.  I needed a place in this article just to applaud them for their workmanship in a fantastic, albeit too short of a match on Raw Monday.  I am hoping beyond hope that either they somehow get involved with a cross brand angle including MVP and Matt that surrounds the tag titles or the IC title or the US title or that at long least Shelton and Hardy go mono-e-mono at Sunday’s PPV…preferably in a ladder match!

Smackdown

Deuce and Domino

Hey…Fonzies…Where are you?  Thumbs down

Major Brothers

Are you guys hanging out with D and D at the old Archie’s establishment? Thumbs down.

Matt Hardy and M.V.P

Well, they weren’t battling it out in the ring but they are the most watchable tag team champions on our televisions today.  I’ll say it again, it is too bad that this tag team title reign is actually about the US title MVP carries with him.  These two will never be Team Extreme, but they are tremendous together.  Their personalities are so different that somehow it works.  MVP’s new lounge act is hysterical.  Thumbs up

Jesse and Festus

Decent promo.  They are finally going to wrestle next week.  Question is…is there a fan that cares now? Thumbs in the middle

TNA

AJ Styles and Tomko

Really didn’t do much in their current feud with Team Pacman at all this week.  Thumbs down.

Team Pac Man

Thumbs down, need I say why anymore?

Team 3D

They defeated Sonjay Dutt and Shark Boy in a match.  Later in the evening they injured Sharky in a similar way to how they injured Scott Steiner.  They showed us why they have been two of the best heels in the business for almost 20 years now. Thumbs Way Up

VKM

They didn’t do anything in the ring but they didn’t have to.  They did a classic promo (almost shoot) on where they are today.  They must have taken a time machine ride and ran into their New Age Outlaws counterparts but instead of VKM getting back into the time machine and being on TNA, The NAO knocked them out and left them in 1997, showed up on impact circa 2007 and donned their personas. Then showed the world what a promo by a great tag team is supposed to be.

Shark Boy and Dutt

They are two capable men, doing great things in TNA.  Their match with 3D was solid and they sold the beating Shark Boy got with elegance and grace.  These two will be contenders someday soon.  Thumbs in the middle since they lost, but they are improving.

In Closing

Great week, I think I’ve said my peace….peace out tag fans!

The Tag team of the Week Award goes to London and Kendrick.  I’m sorry but that move off the apron was just too sick not for them to nab the award.  Brian’s bulldog was on target and that 6-man match was on fire.
