WEEKLY THUMBS

By Joel C. Croyle on 1/26/2008 2:02 PM
Introduction:
To me this week was extremely blah, as they say.  It was like TNA and WWE just had a really long case of “The Mondays”.  Usually in this article I write about some of the great matches and such but I really felt that nothing stood out.  Nothing was really bad but nothing was great either. So instead, today I will discuss some of the things I found puzzling,

Rey and The Edge Heads

Okay first off…why do the Majors not have a name?  Seriously, they dress like Edge and the “Edge Heads” seems to be the right way to go.  Or even the “Rated R Superstars” would be great.  My problem with the match itself came at the end.  I think WWE has seriously lost its rocker when it comes to “Official Rules”. Near the end, one of Edge’s boyz goes out and grabs a chair, he comes in the ring and then he hits some…wait a minute…nope.  The ref CALLED THE BELL BEFORE ANYONE WAS NAILED WITH A WEAPON!!! This really annoyed me.  If you want to get technical Rey should have lost the match.  In the end one of the Edge rejects got nailed with a kick to the chair to the face BY REY.  All that had to happen was for the ref to wait on the bell and I would have accepted DQing Hawkins and Ryder.

Finlay and Great Khali.

I will actually say that on a week of mediocre matches this one was pretty good.  My guess is that Finlay’s agreement with McMahon is that he protects Hornswaggle and then Finlay gets the number 30 entrant number at the rumble.  We’ll see how that all plays out.  One problem I did have is that (and granted I don’t have HD yet) when I was watching this match I actually got dizzy.  Is it just me, or since Monday have the camera’s been doing mainly tight shots?  Especially when Khali was laid out near the steps and Finlay was bashing him, which was just horrible.  I liked that Khali submitted. This was probably the best match of the week.

Chavo and Punk
Let me say first I think it is a travesty that WWE doesn’t seem to want to give a run to Punk in the fashion that he should get.  However, I also think that Chavo Guerrero is fantastic and has deserved a title run for a long time.  If this is how he gets it, than great.  My problem with this situation is that I don’t understand why they wouldn’t give Chavo a grand stage like let’s say the ROYAL RUMBLE at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN to win his belt.  It was atrocious.  I have one hope.  So far as of 8:15am central time on Saturday morning (yes I wake up at 7am on Saturdays, I’m crazy) CM Punk is not in the rumble.  I do wonder if he will be entered and I do wonder if maybe for the first time an ECWite will win…let’s say one Mr. Punk, perhaps? I will say that the match on ECW this week between the two was really strong and one of the better matches this week.

Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton - Handshake
I have no clue as to why they did this angle but they did, so be it.  I loved that Jeff went out to the crowd and talked with people and shook their hands and made it part of the angle.  Jeff is looking really strong heading into the Rumble.  While I don’t think he’ll win, at least not till WM24, he needs to look strong for a good match with Orton.

TNA in general
TNA is so strange right now.  For five minutes you get a great match like Lethal against Devine and then in the next five minutes you get a horrible backstage segment with Dustin Rhodes aka Black Reign. Kurt Angle was much more entertaining on Pro’s vs. Joe’s this week than he was on Impact!  The storylines blur and things don’t add up. The two best things on TNA right now are the Knockouts as a whole and Tomko – how sad is that?
