Georgia Wrestling Promotions ran their second show at the Hot Wheels Skate Center in Woodstock, Georgia Sunday night.
Unfortunately, not near as successfully as the first time. The crowd was 150, half of what they drew for the first show, and while hot early on, they were dead by the latter part of the evening.
It was a disappointing show. Entertaining at times, but also frustrating due to the type of problems that typically plague GWP shows. The lighting was abysmal, as in non existent. There were times when it was difficult to make out what was going on in the ring and forget about seeing facial expressions. They booked guys that downgrade the overall quality of the product, and failed to make the most of an abundance of name talent like Ron Killings, Gangrel, Bill Dundee, Masked Superstar, and Manny Fernandez. Only David Young was well used. There were several late changes to card. There are times when booking on the fly works out for the better. This wasn’t one of them.
(1) Jess Wade & D. L. Norris vs. Justin Dirt & Dustin Powers in around 15 minutes. There must have been some type of miscommunication. NOBODY in their right mind would have booked this to go 15 minutes. The things most likely to stick in people’s minds are the first and last impressions, and this was everything you don’t want them to remember. Finisher was a stuff piledriver on Powers.
Wade said Dirt was headed to Iraq. Dirt saluted the crowd.
(2) Big Head Hanson beat Locomotive (with Ace Heffner) in one minute flat. Crude as hell and the crowd loved it. Hanson attacked Heffner on the outside. Loco attacked Hanson, who no sold his stuff and did a train wreck belly-to-belly suplex. Hanson decapitated Loco with a lariat.
Hellbillies dragged a Heffner into the ring. He legit looked like he didn’t want to be there, and Hanson cold cocked him with a lariat. Hanson said he wanted his title shot (earned at the last show) now. Reverend Dan Wilson answered that beating a bunch of scrubs in a battle royal didn’t mean squat. Rejects attacked Hanson, and Iceberg left him laying with two Ground Zero splashes, the second on a steel chair. Hellbillies ran back out for the save. Commissioner Jerry Palmer said the people were sick of Rejects and made Hellbillies their opponents for the evening. This was a hot segment.
(3) Slim J beat Kid Ego in 5:05. J’s entrance was over but the crowd wasn’t hot for the match until the finish. Really good stuff for intensity and believability. J used a ground attack to dominate Ego. He almost put Ego out with a rear naked choke. Ego decked J with a stiff spinkick. Ego recklessly charged into the corner and got caught with a roll up. Ego threw a fit of frustration.
(4) Hollywood Brunettes (Andrew Alexander & Kyle Matthews with Attorney Jeff G. Bailey & Lexi Pillman) & Talent & Money (J. T. Talent & Andrew Pendleton) beat Regular Guys (Bobby Hill & Tyler Smith) & Chris Lightning & Jeff Jameson in 12:33. Pillman was parading around in smoking hot lingerie with a low back tattoo peaking out, like it was an every day thing for her. She has large features. Bailey cut a promo putting Pillman over as a multi-talent Sex Goddess. Said she was enough to make a preacher stomp out a stained glass window. The focus was the rivalry between Brunettes and Guys. Solid action. The babyface shine lead to a four way collision of heels and a round of bionic elbows. Well intended but not well timed. The heels huddled up. Pillman buried Talent’s head between her boobs for inspiration. Talent was a happy man for the rest of the evening. Jameson was the face in peril. He got tossed out and stomped into oblivion by Bailey’s dog pack. Hill cleaned house with the hot tag. Smith hit a DVD on Alexander, but Matthews sneaked up on Smith with a roll up. I might have missed a blind tag in the darkness.
(5) Jamar Acid beat Texas Ranger in 4:52. Ranger replaced Super Destroyer, who was double booked with SECW. Crowd picked up on Acid’s infectious energy and got into his indiestastic offense. He pinned the redneck Ranger with an enzuigiri.
Notorious D.O.G. entered the ring and offered his services as a bodyguard. Said he was served in the role for the Allman Brothers and David Allan Coe. Ranger declined. D.O.G. warned Acid that bad things could happen. Acid said the only bad stuff was the growth on D.O.G.’s chest. Line of the night. D.O.G.flattened Acid with a power slam.
(6) Gangrel & Bill Dundee beat Masked Superstar & Jay Clinton (with Aaron Voight) in 6:32. This was a switch. Dundee’s scheduled partner (Ace Rockwell) wasn’t there and neither was Gangrel’s scheduled opponent (Patrick Bentley). The Judas Mesias gimmick owes something to Gangrel. Gangrel and Dundee were babyface and they dominated. The memorable thing was the wicked stiff beating Gangrel gave Clinton. The heels eventually got heat on the 64 year-old Dundee. Finish saw Gangrel roll out from under Clinton’s top rope elbow and nail him with the implant DDT.
(7) David Young beat Cru Jones in 16-17 minutes. The comedy to open the match was good times. Young asked Jones if it was true he got into wrestling to roll around with sweaty men. Jones was the perfect guy to play off of. It was almost five minutes before they locked up, but these guys could pull it off because they both carry themselves like major league wrestlers. Jones went nuts celebrating a simple armdrag. Young returned the favor, and the crowd was all over Jones, who got into a merciless verbal exchange with a toothless hag on the first row. Unfortunately, the crowd was fading fast and weren’t feeling it once they got down to wrestling. Young cracked Jones with an enzuigiri to take over. Jones seized the opening when Young missed with a charging knee. Jones ate a boot off the middle rope for a double down spot. Jones hit a short arm clothesline. Moments later, Young caught a charging Jones with a Gibson roll.
(8) Hellbillies (Jessco Blue & Timbo Bryant) beat Devil’s Rejects (Iceberg & Shaun Tempers with Wilson) in 13:47. They were just starting to roll when Iceberg gave Bryant a low blow and ref ruled it a DQ at 3:32. Palmer and Young came out with to intervene. Palmer said Tempers would defend the GWP Heavyweight Title against Young in Lafayette on 2/9 AND the match would continue with no DQs. Young stayed in Hellbillies corner. It turned into what was basically a Texas Tornado streetfight. Pretty wild stuff. Iceberg and Bryant fought their way around the air hockey table and into the arcade machines, but the crowd pretty much ignored them. Rejects isolated Blue inside the ring and prevented Bryant from entering. Bryant forced the issue by using a chair on Iceberg, but Tempers cut him off and set Blue up for staff shot by Wilson. Blue ducked and Tempers took the blow. Blue decked Wilson for a big pop. Tempers got the staff, but Young hit the ring with a spinebuster. Blue covered for three count, which got the biggest pop of any finish. Young laid Iceberg out with a spinebuster in the postmatch.
(9) Ron Killings beat Manny Fernandez in 10:35. They had advertised an appearance by Killings but no match. They had a different idea in mind for him, then changed it when Fernandez was added at the last minute. Killings’ ring entrance was one of the highlights of the evening. Match itself was dull. Fernandez can’t do much in the ring anymore, and it would have been best to limit his physical involvement to an angle. Killing did his corkscrew flying forearm smash. Fernandez bailed. Long heat on Killings with Fernandez working the leg. Killings made the comeback with the splits into a jumping heel kick enzuirgiri. A second kick missed. Fernandez thought he had Killings outsmarted and walked into a superkick for the pin.
